Tomato Time

Although I've ordered a couple of tomato plants for my garden I decided I may as well have a go at growing some from seed. I don't have a greenhouse but what I do have is a sunny windowsill in the bathroom, plenty of compost and plant pots and loads of plastic bags that I saved from buying my greengrocery. I'm trying to be more eco friendly so any plastic that I think I can use - from plastic cartons to plastic bags - I put to one side in our garage and reuse.
So a month or so ago I put a few seeds in a large pot with some finely sifted compost and then covered the pot with an old bag that had had a cabbage in it. They survived quite well and I've now stood them just outside my back door by my herb tub to get used to the fickle English weather.
As you can probably see, they don't seem too upset! And, of course, being frugal, I've washed the cabbage bag that covered the seeds to use again in the future!

Yes. All you need is a big pot and some compost. They need plenty of water and plant food every couple of weeks - I usually opt for chicken manure. And of course they do need a bit of sun to ripen them.
