Our mind process what we see, hear, smell, touch and feel. Often we are NOT aware of the many things our mind is processing; hence our inability to understand most of our dreams. Have you caught yourself in the middle of the argument while trying to pray? The sad truth is the results of unpleasant thoughts; pumping heart, sweating and clenched fist.. You are unintentionally fighting. So your mind can abuse you if you let it . In other words, you are allowing your mind to affect your health negatively. Have you experienced results of unpleasant thoughts?

I practiced controlling my thoughts so even if I am having a nightmare, I can still fight back.

It is true! We are not victims of our thoughts even dreams. We have to learn to access the power of our subconscious mind. It controls your fatal organs without fail. You never worry about your heart beat and lungs for example because it is controlled by your subconscious mind. The same could be the case with wanting to sleep when you want to. It is a learned behaviour to weed out the habit of allowing your mind to abuse you.

@akalinus Start with learning to relax. Find suitable guided meditation. You will also find more about your non-physical attributes as you explore your true self.

Often, your thoughts are controlled by what you put into your head. If you fill it with good things, your thoughts will become more positive.

@17gracemalealea You are welcome. We can't control the evil in the world but we can control our reactions to things that happen.

Don't you think at the point you become aware of the quality of your thoughts you can either continue or stop? Think about what those deep thoughts do to your body.

@Lavanya15 Exactly! If you are not able to sleep it means a whole lot of things that will not function as they are suppose to function during your sleep to keep you healthy. Lack of sleep is a common factor that would soon force you to consult your doctor. You may consider thinking about that!
