Don't we eat weird things?

Was talking to one of my best friends about weird foods we eat. Like who in the world was the first person to think let's eat this weird red bottom feeder known as a lobster? What about sour cream? Cottage cheese? Why were these things something someone looked at, and thought, hmmn, Ima eat that! What other things can you look at, and think, I can't believe we eat that!

I have often found cheese strainers in Roman excavations. They exist since the Chalcholitic in Europe (circa 2500 BC). I wonder who had first the idea to produce cottage cheese ? It was a revolution at the time.

yeah, cheese stuff got figured out a long time ago, but it's kinda weird. Like who realized they could do stuff to milk to make butter/cheese

I feel like a lot of the foods we eat today may have come from necessity. I bet the first time someone caught a lobster (instead of a fish) they thought "Well, I can't go home without food for my family, so this crustacean will have to do". Things like sour cream and cottage cheese were probably happy accidents. Buttermilk was probably brought about by the need to not waste anything... It is interesting, however, to think of all the combinations we eat today. I am sure our ancestors would look at us and think "Why would you eat flaming hot cheetos?"

@Jessicalynnt Yes it is. I mean, we are still constantly discovering things to eat, or use. Maybe not us as individuals, but restaurants find new and unique ways to use things we wouldn't normally use. Like seaweed for instance, I guess it's not a new concept, but it's definitely a weird one.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am glad for much of this, like the parts of meat animals that most ppl 'dont't want to eat, but that is a huge waste! So glad that they make those parts into other foods and things

Vince doesn't like cheese and always tells people they wouldn't either if they had seen how it is made. He then gives this great spiel about how they take sour milk blah blah.

Cottage cheese is manmade but lobster is a shellfish and man has always eaten shellfish.

lobster used to be what they served to convicts, because as a bottom dweller it was considered trash food!

I am beginning to think that I should give up meat, not that I eat lots of it, but when I see all those meat processing plants, it turns me off.

Well, I don't know how people start out eating most foods, but I do know about lobsters. It seems that in early colonial times, lobsters were in so abundance that they considered them the garbage of the ocean. When food was scarce and money was tight in the early days of our country, they couldn't afford to feed prisoners meals, so they started giving them lobster. Can you imagine that early prisoners got served lobster three meals a day? They were living like kings and didn't even know it! haha
