I really wanted to do donuts; but I did a piece on donuts on Donut Day some months ago. Dates grow on date palms which can reach 69-75 feet (21-23 meters). The origin is thought to be in the area between Egypt and Mesopotamia. There is evidence to suggest that date cultivation started around 7000 B.C.; and fossil evidence shows that the date palm has existed for at least 50 million years. Dates contain a lot of good things such as antioxidants, B-6, iron, fiber and potassium. When dried they contain 75% sugar. They can be stuffed, used in salads, smoothies and stews. We always had figs and dates around at Christmastime when I was young. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I never care for dates for some reason. Especially blind ones. Oh wait. Different dates.

@LindaOHio Damn, damn, damn. I forgot this was an older post and I saw a comment from John Roberts and got excited. Then saw the date.

Dates kind of freak me out. I don't mind them, but for some reason they make me think of cockroaches and so I have a hard time eating them without thinking I am eating a cockroach haha

We don't really eat them as much as other countries, do we? I had no idea they (the trees) could grow so big! wow.

No. In some countries they are staples in their diets.

A couple of years ago I started using dates to sweeten things instead of granulated sugar. I make a pretty good pumpkin pie that is only sweetened with dates.

@LindaOHio I fooled my Mom with my pudding- totally fooled her. I soaked dates soft, tossed them into the blender with ripe avocado and cocoa powder. Even some mint extract if you have it. Totally tasty and full of fat but its good fat and zero refined sugar. Too thick of pudding? Slurp in a little almond milk. Does NOT taste dietetic and does not have a weird after taste. Addictive, though.

Yes. Donuts would have been much better. However, I understand the reasoning behind your decision to write about dates instead. As for dates...yuck.

I've written about donuts before on another post; BUT if I had continued this series I would have surely included donuts. Donuts are KING!

@LindaOHio Much better than dates, that's for sure. Unless it's a young blonde with big hooters.

The only way I like dates is in a date nut roll my Mom used to make.

The dried ones are really sweet; but I will eat them occasionally. I prefer figs.

Interesting info! I have a good recipe for date nut bars, but haven't made them in years.

Thanks for the information about dates. That's a lot of sugar when they're dried, isn't it?

Yes, but at least it's a natural sugar, not refined.

Donuts sound much better! But that is great to know about dates. Sound healthy too...except for the sugar (even from fruits they would affect me).
