Would you like to work for the government?

Sometimes I am thinking my career options and want to work in the government in either clerical, customer service, or even IT role some day. I took my civil service exam more than 10 years ago but never got to using it. I just took it because it is a requirement if one will seek employment in the government. When I was still studying, I happen to intern for a government agency for social security and I just winged it. Besides, I just interned there because it was the first who accepted me. And I was naive even unfit, but it does not matter so much because it is just 2 or 3 units. Now that I am older, I am re thinking of working in the government out of curiosity or for a change. I feel that whatever not so good things I experienced and saw working there, ie problem with more tenured clerical staff, and also the gap in service, I will be able to handle it better now, but I am not that very sure. Have you made a career move in the past that you can say is the right one now?

Nope. Clerical is not my cup of tea. Lousy at keeping records. And the government is restrictive.

Yes I can see that. I changed my mind too about reliance on the president government for some time now, which makes me lose some of enthusiasm about working in / being part of the govt in that role. But I still can consider it as an employment alternative.

@judithml Employment is simply a way of earning income. But what is it that you really want to do? Do you want to be a clerk? Would you be happy being one for all your life? Remember our greatest pool player Efren Reyes? He only wanted to play billiards and his passion brought him the glory.

@eileenleyva No that's only for the meantime, as I said alternative employment option as it is something I never tried ever ie being a govt employee I was always been emplyed by private companies. I am also into IT but will take time to build all the specialised skills to be paid for it

Working in Government organizations have both pros and cons... As far as career choice is concerned, I used to be a professor and then I shifted to corporate, but honestly I am looking back and starting the same....

@Aansh13 Great, well yeah maybe students are more exciting to deal with. Myself, i am just thinking of working in government bec where i am currently in what you may call corporate well idk how to call it i work in private companies who are just contractors - i sometimes get tired of what this is for. But maybe things will change one day.

@judithml Not in school, I used to teach in grad college... wanted to go back because teaching has always been my passion, plus I just wanted to explore corporate, which I have done, and I think I am better of teaching

@thelme55 Oh, yes. While I'm not really sure why, I guess that the reason is that it is not really simple as I am thinking. I guess I am looking at the side where it would be just like working in private companies in a frontline or supportive role, but this time in a government agency

Yes I heard that is starting to be true here too recently in the last few years. Esp teachers now are paid better wages. That helps because the government workers salary need to compete with that offered by private companies.
