We live in a small country town and i see alot of young kids around the age of 5 or 6 walking to and from school by themselves, We live on a main road and in the mornings and afternoons it is very dangerous, To get to the school you have to cross a busy road and there is no traffic lights or childrens crossing around! At what age would you allow your children to walk to and from school alone?

I would say around 14-15 depends on the maturity of the child

There cant be a specific ag to allow kids to go to school alone. As long as parents think they are mature enough to take care of themselves they should be allowed to move to school alone.

unless we live close to the school probably not till they have their own car. but i started walking to school in probably 5th-6th grade, once i got my own house keys i walked to school or took the bus. but where i lived, my school was a block away and along a side road. and although when going to intermemtiate and high school was slightly more dagerous, along a main road and then a highway the area was still safe, and while in HS most of the time i walked with a friend. i asumed my parents though that i was old enough in HS to walk, also, we only had one car and both my parents worked.

Wow, that is young, no matter what town I lived in I would never let my 5 year old walk alone, that is just to young, maybe my 10 year old and that is still pushing it.

I don't hava kids, but I won't let my 11 y/o sister walk to her bus stop (a block away) in the morning she gets picked up at 6:30 and its still pretty dark. The afternoon i dont care as much but im not sure of an age... depends on the area and maturity level!

That depends on where I live. If we lived in a small town I'd allow them to go to school by themselves when they were around 9-10 years. If we lived in a big town, them I'd allow them to go when they were 13-14. But obviously, it dependes on the child's maturity.

What sort of parents can let their children go alone at that age!!!!!!!!!! I would be sick with worry. Unfortunately there are too many monsters in this world these days to be able to let your children out alone at a young age. We still worry about our daughter and she is nearly 19. I'm waiting for her to come home now!!!!!!

Mine walked that age, but that was over 20 years ago, and we did not live on a busy road, and we had sidewalks. Also had a program called "Block Mothers" where people volunteered to be at home if a kid had an emergency. They had a sign in their window. Some businesses even did that.
