A 24 year old hiker from Fresno California is thanking his lucky stars that an off duty California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer who was hiking the Willow Creek Trail above Bass Lake with the help of good Samaritans saved his life when the hiker gambled with his life trying to get across the lake that had a rush of water that is capable to taking anyone for their last ride of their life. CHP Officer Brent Donley who has experience is rescues in the past had in his possession a rope when he took action to save the hiker who was trapped in a whirlpool of water by throwing the rope to the hiker and with the help of a few onlookers, managed to get the hiker out of the water. Officer Donley went the extra mile to stay with the hiker until emergency medical services personnel arrived along with deputies with the Madera Sheriff's Office rescue team arrived to take him to a local hospital where he recovered from the shock of his near death experience and released. I am sure that Officer Donley will just say he was doing his duty to save lives in his community even though he was off the clock on Saturday afternoon. If I were the hiker, I would buy Officer Donley a meal, thank him for saving his life and think twice trying to cross a body of water that has a huge rush flowing down the lake since he was lucky that a police officer was in the area. Or as that old saying goes "He dodged a bullet."

It's not an extra mile. Good Samaritan laws and alot of police and ems laws state, that if you start working with a person, you HAVE to stay until other professional help arrives. I mean, that's awesome of him, but something people need to know. If you start CPR, or first aide, or anything with an injured person you then have to stay until other professional help arrives, or you are NOT covered under good Samaritan laws.

I am sure that the hiker will reward Officer Donley by buying him some lunch or other favors in return.

This is why you should never go hiking alone, and yeah, what a mistake for the hiker to make in his judgement.

I have read that hikers need to be with a partner or guide to stay safe on their journey.

Thankfully someone was there to save him. Some people wouldn't even try, but might panic and do nothing.

You are right since a brave person does something even if he or she is scared.

Such a great work that officer did because its not easy as we think to save person in so fast rushing water. Still humanity we get to see in police otherwise here we can't trust them.
