“The House Next Door” is a somewhat old (2002) direct ti DVD thriller directed by Joey Travolta, older brother of John. A young couple relocated from Chicago to a Seattle suburb. The wife is haunted by nightmares of when she was assaulted and raped. The couple next door seem friendly at least the woman is. The military vet husband owns a bar and collects handguns. You quickly get the drift he is a wife abuser and womanizer who has designs on his young new neighbor. She becomes suspicious that he has done away with his wife after spying him digging a hole in the backyard. That sort of tip things off. Similar to a Lifetime movie with a rising body count, ineffectual husband and she has to do it herself. The movie stars A.J. Cook (Jennifer on “Criminal Minds”) as the young wife. “Blood and Money” is a brand new movie somehow turning up on You Tube. The setting is the bleak northern Maine wilderness of snow, endless cold and more snow. Tom Berenger stars as sick old man Jim (he coughs up blood) who is an alcoholic estranged from his son and guilt ridden that he caused his daughter’s death. He is out hunting for a buck and mistakenly shoots a fur covered woman who is a member of a gang that pulled a casino robbery. She was stashing the money. Jim takes the money but now has the rest of the gang hunting him. It is a cat and mouse game with Jim given advantage to his familiarity with the terrain. Predictable but entertaining enough. The scenery is stunning at times and you can feel the freezing cold. How did you celebrate Friday night? With a martini or diet coke?
