A Lazy Day on the River

I had no real plans to do anything over Memorial Day weekend, given that travel is still frowned upon due to coronavirus. However, in talking with a few of the girls at work, we got on the subject of our local springs and tubing on the river. It turns out a few of them have never been. So a lightbulb went off in my head and I invited them to go to the springs with me. Although there are numerous springs around the area, only two of them offer tubing down the river. One is a private facility on the Santa Fe River, and the other a state park on the Ichetucknee River. The private facility has better and more numerous springs to swim in, but the state park has a more scenic tubing experience. We opted to try for the private facility, but by the time we arrived they were already filled to capacity, so we made our way to the state park, which--surprisingly--was practically empty and devoid of people. I think most people have not realized the state parks have opened back up here in Florida. So we essentially had the entire place to ourselves! We spent the entire day tubing on the river. The Ichetucknee River is a spring-fed, pristine river in north Florida. The river is only 6 miles long (9.7 km) before merging into the bigger Suwannee River. The average width along the river is 20 feet (6.1 m) wide and the average depth is 5 feet (1.5 m). The water is crystal clear along the entire 6 mile journey. There are three access points along the river. If you get in at the spring head, it's about a 4.5 hour float down the river. The other access points are the midpoint landing (1.5 hour float trip), or Dampier's Landing (45 minute float trip). We opted to enter at the midpoint landing. From the exit point in the river, it's about a 20 minute walk back to the midpoint, or you can wait for a shuttle to drive you back (which can take up to 30 minutes waiting). Since it was such a beautiful day out, we opted to walk back each time. We were able to get in three tube runs on the river. We all had so much fun that we're planning to go again this upcoming Friday, this time with a bigger group of staff, and we're going to go earlier so we can get into the private facility. Have you ever been tubing or floating down a lazy river? It's a great way to spend a fun day out in nature!

No crocodiles in those rivers? I have been always scared to go near water in Florida because of that big animals.

Yes, there are alligators in the river, but they usually aren't that big. At this time of the year, they aren't really in the water that much, as the water is really cold. The alligators don't bother people.

@moffittjc May be they don't bother people, but I feel uneasy being close to a big one.

@LadyDuck I’ve never seen a big one in these rivers. Besides, the water is too cold for them. Their metabolism shuts down when the temperature is below 80 F, and the river water is 72 F.

I used to do that when I was a child. There was a river a few feet behind our house and it was fun.

A few feet behind your house? I hope the river never flooded! Haha But yes, since you’ve done it before you know how much fun it is!

@thelme55 How fun that must have been! My first house I bought after I graduated from the university had tall coconut trees surrounding our swimming pool, and we used to climb them and jump into the pool. Those were fun times!

@moffittjc yes, it was flooding sometimes but there were nipa palm trees between our house and the river. It was indeed fun. We were even climbing on the coconut trees then jump on the river as kids

I used to go tubing with my parents and brothers every summer. Such fun! I haven’t done it since I was living at home, but my grandkids do it in Connecticut. We have some wonderful rivers here.

@moffittjc Yes, I do know how much fun it is. I have no stress in my life right now, but when the rivers open up here and the water heats up, I just may do it again with hubs, my son, and his girlfriend!

It's an especially attractive outdoor option in the heat of the summer. When it gets so miserably hot, cooling down in our freezing cold rivers and springs is just the thing to make living here bearable.

@JudyEv I keep trying to tell everyone that Florida is not the paradise everybody makes it out to be. Sometimes I wonder if Hell itself would be a cooler alternative to a summer in Florida!

There are many that do that here, but more that use their canoes. That time of the year. I have floated along. Enjoy the peaceful day.

@moffittjc Yes keeping things closed forever also poses many challenges. We have something similar here. The worry is that some areas which had things in control have had new cases.

Everything is slowly opening back up. Probably about half of everything is open now. Each week, the government slowly lets more and more businesses and activities open up. The number of positive virus cases in Florida is still climbing, but the percentage increase has slowed down dramatically, indicating we have probably passed our peak and should start seeing declines soon.

It looks and sounds like a nice time, but I'm afraid of water critters-snakes and whatnot, so it would not be relaxing for me. Are there any water critters in the river?

Yes, lots of critters. But they don’t mess with people. The reptiles are usually not very active because the water is so cold. I saw lots of otters and deer while we were tubing.

Floating down the river is one of my favorite "lazy" things to do in nature. When I'm tubing down the river, I don't have a care in the world. How are you Laure? I haven't seen you here in like forever it seems!

@Happy2BeMe Well, I caught the coronavirus (most likely from Disney World) and I was sidelined for 19 days. But then when I recovered, I have been non-stop active every since, doing a lot of camping, hiking, kayaking, swimming, tubing and whatever else I can think of in the great outdoors. Loving this beautiful weather we've been having, but at the same time knowing it's not going to last too much longer before getting miserably hot. Basically, just living the best life I can amidst this stupid pandemic!

@DocAndersen That was one of the selling points to parents when I used to run a summer camp. I would promise them that their kids would go home exhausted and fall asleep right after dinner. I did not disappoint. We had a waiting list of parents trying to get their kids in my camp!

A lot of new resorts being built in the US these days have lazy rivers on their properties, in addition to pools and other water features. It's a nice addition to all the water options available while vacationing. But nothing beats getting out into the wild and experiencing nature that hasn't been disturbed by man.

That's a shame that there are so few clean natural waterways left in the world. I'm very lucky that there are two beautiful, crystal-clear rivers near where I live, where the water is so clean you could probably drink straight out of the river.

I went tubing two days last week. The first time, I sat on my tube the first two runs (once on my stomach, once on my back), and then for the final tube run I was pretty much in the water the whole time, as it was very hot by then. On the second day, we only did two tube runs, and once I was up laying on my tube and the the second time I was in the water.

@moffittjc I'm in Giza now, I have view for the pyramids from the terrace. The red sea is only one and half hour away but all beaches are closed, you cannot go close to the sea police would stop you.. :/ The mediterranean sea is about two hours drive away from here without traffic.
