The Midnight Visitor (Uninvited and Unwanted)

So the climax of my story came finally, almost a week ago. I was watching a TV series in bed, when I heard bangings somewhere in the neighborhood again. (That had happened the previous two nights, but more sporadic.) We had run the first two nights to check where the weird loud unusal noises came from, but when nothing further was heard, we sort of shaking our head, thinking that someone must have dropped something accidentally. By 12:30AM THAT fateful night , I decided to go turning on the outside lights. The noise miraculously stopped. The noise returned by 1AM, with sound of a hand saw very close to our kitchen. I tiptoed turning on the light outside the back. There, I saw a well dressed young, about 6ft tall, good looking stranger (white, caucasian, like a 20ish Heath Ledger) wearing a black beanie and a light grey tracksuit top (no hood), dark jeans, taking a stroll in my backyard. Seeing the light, he turned towards me, gave me an angelic (drugged influenced?) smile, then calmly walked backward. When the police arrived, they found two damaged doors, the security door had got some cuts, while the timber door had a big hole via which, a football could pass through. The burglar almost got in but the deadlock there stopped him. Sign of sawing showed that he was determined to break apart the lower section of the door. (He had opened a latch and two other locks there!) This is the odd part: that guy seemed to sit there at the back of our garden, waiting for the police to leave. The two police were more determined than that, they walked around and around, checking every nook and cranny. We heard running when the police came too close to the back fence, the police gave chase, but the guy seemed to disappear into thin air. From our description of our unwanted visitor, we were told the next day that the police know exactly who that person was. The second police group when coming to do the forensic check, vaguely pointed towards the property at our back, and said, 'there!' (I had guessed so, but didn't want to cause trouble to the nice 50ish YO parents of that kid! AND I used to envy them for having such beautiful sweet boys... )

I think I would be getting a big, mean dog. Seems like even if the dog does not bite, it makes people stop and think.

@marlina when my oldest son moved out, I made him put up beware of dog signs even though he doesn't even have a fish at this point. It at least makes them wonder.

Do you have valuables he would want. I am glad you have strong doors and locks.

I don't think we have anything fancy inside the house. I think his family might be more well off than ours. I noticed his parents and him/his brother, got 2-3 expensive 4WD in their driveway. Their house is giant and very well kept. Both the parents and the boys are working, the parents (step-dad), seems to be earning good money.

@hereandthere A thousand dollars so far, and another $500 on CCTV (but these cameras aren't here yet). I had planned to secure our windows and doors here, but the estimate was in the $15000 (which I don't have ).

@YrNemo Yes I would hope that too to be able to secure your home better also. Also very good they have him on their files so they will keep their eye on him. Wishing that he never goes back ever and you stay safe.

@YrNemo They arrest people here but we donĀ“t know what happens after maybe they have to keep going to court every 15 days and that is it until all this settles down. More people smoke than ever now there is more anger, more sadness just right now.

Let hope we could find the fund to secure our place a bit better. (That intruder ran before the police could get him, they know who he is after getting the description from me, but they can't do anything much except to keep an eye on him - as they have been doing so from his bad (criminal?) records.)

@amitkokiladitya I read some articles about this sort of thing, and learned that even with CCTV and clear image of the burglars/intruders, the police still can't do much except to give those baddies a date or two in court.

@LowRiderX I have an acquaintance, her kid was in jail after stabbing someone (he was protecting his girlfriend). Yet after three years in jail, he suddenly became a WEIRD philosopher, who believed that the government should continue funding his lifestyle (that is, giving him weekly social benefit). THAT has gone on for 20 years or so now. (And I heard that he used to be such a bright young man!)

I have made similar mistakes, some little children could be a real nightmare when you know them a bit longer.

My Chinese neighbor has decided to return after knowing the ID of that guy (he broke her windows so many times two years ago). I talked to the step father of that youth, not blaming or identifying anyone, just told him of someone from that direction who climbed over our shared fence. I said enough to let him understand the situation without losing the good relationship between us neighbors. (I declined the police's offer to identify that youth. I gave them a good description however, so I think they understand my situation.)

I kept thinking, 'why target us suddenly after years of being good neighbors to each other?' (I saw his step father two days ago, he was a bit surprised seeing me. Guess he told his step-sons that he believed I had moved away (????).)

Turned out that that man who scared us on that certain weekend was a different person. The kid who almost got caught, was from a property at the back of our property. I know his mother and step-father. Seen his uncle & father often too, the latters are builders/landscapers/gardeners etc.)

I don't know for sure about the law. I read more cases (about this sort of things) seems as the police can't really keep them for long, and that as long as these baddies turn up to court on a certain day, the burglars could continue burglarizing until got caught the next time.

Oh my, that is so creepy. If you intend to burgle someone don't do it making a lot of noise whilst they're home! Some people are so silly.

I am not sure. The forensic police lady was very serene and kept to herself (while her partner gave me some tips, and from that, extracted more info from me about the culprit. I noticed he wrote down everything I told him). The female forensic police took all neccessary photos but discreetly smiled whenever I said something amusing. Since she said nothing about the case, I have no clue really.
