A cool picture from my hike the other day.

I mentioned that my friend and I took a walk along the bike path the other day. We kept it slow and took a few pictures as we hiked. One of my favorites was this shot we took of a flowering "prickly pear" cactus. I learned years ago, the hard way, that you DO NOT TOUCH these things even if you think you're touching a smooth part. But people who know what they're doing can actually skin them and cook them up. Have you gotten any nice walks in recently? It started raining literally as soon as we got home, so our timing was perfect.

@thelme55 That's a tad chilly. I'd guess it's about 17 C here.

@wolfgirl569 Is there grass out there? Or do they have to be happy with their morning and evening flakes?

I am interested with the prickly pear, not with the flower but with the fruit.

Love the photo. I have not gotten any hiking in. The knee (replaced Jan 15) is still not healed enough for me to chance uneven terrain. Looking forward to getting out there again soon, that and visits to my favorite tidepools.

What kinds of physical therapy are you doing at this point? I had an ACL replacement 20 years ago. That knee seems fine now.

@TheHorse I've been through one round already, the standard restrengthen, get the flex back that sort of thing. I am about to start a second round to work on the bursa and tendons in the lower left (my left) portion of the right knee. The Doc seems to think that the tendons have shrunk a bit due to the length of time I was dealing with the injury and need to be doing things to stretch it out. My gait has absolutely changed and things are just not jumping on the bandwagon of getting back to normal. I am willing to do whatever to get to a point of no pain. I am grateful for the decision to go ahead with the replacement. I am better able to get around now and am doing things I have not been able to do for several years. Just keep getting the annoying pains.

Prickly pears are delicious, I hope they will open the border before summer so I can go to Italy and buy them.

@TheHorse The prickly pears are sold in Italy ONLY already peeled, they all come from Sicily, the only place where they grow in large quantities. We usually eat them raw, they are sweet and fresh. I also like to prepare a jam. In Italy we call them "fichi d'India" (Indian figs), the name derives surely from the fact that Columbus was the one who brought those fruits back to Italy, but he thought he had landed in India, that is the reason of the name.

What do they taste like? How do you cook them? Are the one you buy already "peeled"? I could send you thousands of them if I knew how to safely pick them.

The have tiny, almost invisible, spires that will take up residence in your fingers and be hard to remove.

That's a really pretty flower for such an awful plant. The prickly pear is a huge pest in Australia. It was introduced to provide something for coddling moth (I think) to eat instead of eating the cotton crops. Now it's a massive problem.

@TheHorse They are only a pest on the north-east coast. And people do eat them or at least make jam (jelly) out of them.
