I make more money not working in the summer

It is true--my checks are actually bigger in the summer when I'm not working than during the school year. They don't take out "voluntary" deductions like pension, union dues, health insurance, etc. That being said I'm not really "earning" that money. I do summer savings each year. The district takes 10% of my post-tax income and holds onto it. Then they pay me July 1, July 15, August 1, and August 15. It is money that I've already earned. They are just giving it back to me.

That happened to me when I taught, too. Now I only receive one pension check a month, but it's almost as much as I would have made if I still taught. Something good to look forward to for you.

That's a good way to keep getting paid in the off season.

Even though they don't deduct for health insurance, are you covered and do you make payments during the "off" months?
