Found a dead animal in the backyard

Hubby and I were pulling out weeds and vines growing in the backyard. When hubby went to pull some out next to the AC all of a sudden he jumped back and told me there was a dead animal there. I went to check and he was right. The dead animal was between the fence and a wooden plank next to the AC. There was a paw sticking out and we saw fur but the upper part of the body was not visible. It was hard to tell what it was. Hubby says it is a dog but I think it is a raccoon. I wanted to get rid of the thing but hubby said he is not touching it. I am not sure if I am up to doing it myself either. If I start taking it out I might scream. But keeping it there is probably not such a good idea... Maybe I should ask my parents to come and get rid of it. It is their house after all.

Call Animal Control and see if they will help you.

I would call the local animal authority to let them know, they would come to get rid of the animal.

When that happens here, I ask around for someone to do it for us and just pay them. I don't have the stomach to remove that.

@lovebuglena just a neighbor who is willing to earn instant cash. They do the dirty work, so to speak.

@Alexandoy Hubby was not able to get it out. He tried many times yesterday. I am wondering if perhaps the animal is partly on the neighbor's side. Hard to tell. If it is, would be a good idea to get them involved. Maybe they can help.

So whatever animal that was, did it get stuck trying to get through the fence or something?

I have no idea. And I have no idea how long it has been there. I have a feeling also that it may partially be on the neighbor's side.

@moffittjc I see a spider and I scream and run away. Sometimes even when I see a fly or an ant. But I didn't scream when I saw that. But maybe that was because I already knew it was there. I probably would have screamed if I saw it not knowing it was there.

@moffittjc Yesterday, hubby tried to pull it out more than once to no avail. It must be stuck.

No. I wanted to take a picture but you can't see the entire animal. Only one paw sticking out and a part of the body. The rest is hidden by the fence. I am not sure if it is 100% on our property.

Oh... Poor little thing... You must be shocked. And I wonder what happened later. Did your parents deal with it?

I just called mom and she was not happy to hear that. She wants me to deal with it myself.

@lovebuglena uhh...That's not good. Have you remove it?

Depending on how long it's been there, if it isn't removed it could start to smell.

I would have animal control come and deal with it. There is a possibility that it could be rabid or diseased and you or your husband shouldn't be handling it and it shouldn't be left in the fence area to decompose. I wouldn't expose your parents to the animal either for the same reasons. Animal control is trained in handling this sort of thing, and if it is a dog (or cat) and if it was reported lost it might bring closure to the animal's family.

It doesn't look like a dog or a cat.

@BearArtistLady I would not touch it with bare hands.

@lovebuglena I would still call the humane society. Too many wild creatures have rabies and if you happen to get cut and are in touch with their body fluids including their blood you are susceptible to rabies or other diseases too. It's much better to be safe than sorry, especially if it is a larger animal.

It should be removed, because the corpse will start to stink.

I agree with you on that.
