Definitely Not a Farmer's Tan

Have you ever seen someone in the summer whose wearing something that clearly shows they have been swimming? The "swimmer's" tan where you can see the outline of their bathing suit due to the skin being lighter in that area, or the "farmer's" tan where the shirt is hiding skin that is shaded lighter than the skin on their arms or chest? I have a "flip flop" tan. I have "fancy" flip flops, and I have regular flip flops, but I have three pairs, and I wear them a lot this summer. I noticed the other day the whiter skin showing the outline of where the flip flops covered my feet. I go places, and I walk my dogs, but I spend no extra time in the sun because I wilt in the heat. And Oklahoma gets HOT! I take after my mom in that we both have very fair complexions. Neither of us really ever tanned unless we were outside for hours. My dad is very tan, and my sister is somewhat in between. Do you tan? Do you want to? Is it ever on accident? I guess I should also remind people to wear sunscreen with a high SPF. That's important. My sister used to stay outside for hours with no sunscreen, saying she tanned better after she would get a sunburn. I told her that was a great way to get skin cancer. Hopefully, she won't pay for it later.

My Dad, who was a farmer, used to have such sensitive skin. He had to wear a very protective sun screen, and wear a hat, he had lupus and his skin showed it. I take after him, and I have tan lines here and there from wearing a watch, rings, and tops that are open in the front.

@AmbiePam I learned a lot about making the best out of any situation with having a father who had lupus to the extent that he had it. He could make a big deal, and have a lot of fun doing some of the lowest and hardest work there was to be done on the farm. He was always very thankful that he was well enough to do those jobs. Its all in the perspective.

@Juliaacv He passed such a great legacy in to you. He sounds like my dad, but my dad never had the heavy load of a disease.

I tan too well. I get that driver's tan . . . where the left arm is like a farmer's tan . I also get that flip flop tan . . . but currently I have a funny sandal tan. My sandals have these thin bands across the top, so my tan looks sort of like tiger stripes on the side . I don't mind so much - as long as I don't get sun burned - but I am lucky I don't get burned easily (well, my face might these days).

@AmbiePam They are now, but I am sure they will disappear by winter (the funny tan lines - not my feet ).

I have flip flop tan and swimming suit tan among others. And I have also had skin cancer. Not the worst kind (with which you can die) but one that doctors stop with a small surgery. I loved sun when nobody said anything against sun tan. I had a skin that did not get red so I was happy.

That's a good point. Decades ago people never warned of skin cancer.

I used to tan easy and almost never got burned when I was younger, but since my heart surgery I really can't take the heat anymore. I just sit outside in the sun early in the morning or later in the day after it cools down some.

I feel you with sandal tan :-) I tend to live in Crocs sandals in summer and get the trademark "z" shape from the straps on the top of my feet. In summer I don't really tan on purpose, though I do like having a bit of color. I like to wear tank tops so the tops of my shoulders get sun, and have the line from the tank top. I don't mind the line. Yes, burning is a bad idea.... :/

Even if your sister does not get skin cancer it will age her more.. I do not seem to tan much, and I am outside quite a bit. I have some sunscreen I made. I have some facial moisturizer that has sunscreen.

I am like your mom and you, I am a fair complexion and I do not tan, I was envious of my mother, but I never tried hard, I do not want a sunburn.

I no longer sunbathe. It is not good for me and I overheat and don't feel well. Instead, I have a beach chair with an umbrella and if I go sit on the beach I can have the umbrella provide me with plenty of shade.

no, my skin is fair and they say that fair skin is prone to skin cancer. I have a lot of moles too though they are small.and flat but I really avoid the sun. In your case, i think it is better to stay away from the sun. Good evening there, Amber.

I've always had a tan up to the past few years when my doc said very little direct sun as with the meds I take it could burn!

I tan much less than I used to do to keep my doctors happy, and wear sunscreen just about every day. I do get tan lines from my sunglasses. I'm sure your flip flop tans lines look pretty cute.

I try to tan in the summer. I'll go to the park and sit for an hour or so. I'll usually have my sandals on and have the sandal tan which is an interesting design on my feet. I'll wear my shortest shorts and a sleeveless top to get the most out of a good tan.
