It's wattle time in Australia

We have two wattle trees down by our dam and I keep meaning to take a photo of them. Then, near the doctor’s surgery, I spotted a magnificent wattle in full bloom. I wrote about the wattle in September 2018 (https://www.mylot.com/post/3217431/let-me-tell-you-what-a-wattle-is) but there are probably a lot of new members now who may not know that Acacia Pycnantha, or golden wattle, is Australia’s national floral emblem. There are some 1350 species with nearly 1,000 of them being found in Australia. Acacias are also found in Africa, Madagascar, throughout the Asia - Pacific region and in the Americas. There is a range of foliage types, sizes and colours. The flowers may be either globular heads or cylindrical spikes. In other news, I recently wrote about having a Fuel Card from the government and needing to use the money before the end of June. While we were in the city, we used $74 of the $74.04 we were entitled too so that made our day. For some reason you can’t pay some of the amount by card and some by other means so, when it comes to using up the last few dollars, it’s a bit of a game to get as close as you can to the exact amount.

In the winter, when the sun shines on them, the wattles look very cheerful.

@wolfgirl569 I forgot to say it's only for those that don't live in the metropolitan area.

@JudyEv That's good you get help with fuel costs. We don't have a program like that here. We're at the mercy of the gas stations.

@just4him Gas has fallen in price here. No-one was going anywhere for quite some time.

We get $750 each year. I forgot to say that only those who live in the country get this money as fuel is more expensive once you get out of the city.

Wattle sounds like... Waffles? Or maybe waddles? Is there a story about why they are called wattles?

There doesn't seem to be any information on why it's called a wattle tree.

@Tierkreisze That's a great idea. You make up a story and I'll say if it is good or not.

Thats too bad. But then again, maybe we should make our own origin story for the wattle tree then?

Acacia is very common indeed in Asia as we have it here. $74 for gas is a big help to seniors.

The fuel card was for $750 for 12 months. We had used all bar $74 but needed to use it up by the end of June.

Not sure I like the wattle enough to want it to be a national emblem. That’s excellent about the gas card! Every little bit helps right now!

It is $750 that they hand out for each 12 month period so it's not to be sneezed at.

@shaggin We used the $750 in bits and pieces and in the end we were left with $74.04. We managed to stop the nozzle on $74 so we were pleased with that. If we had spent $74.05, it wouldn't have accepted the card so we had to stop at or before $74.04. Hope that's clear now.

Haha - yes, the government only got 4c back from us. Last year we lost $17. We tried to use the money on the last day and something went wrong so we missed out. We didn't make that mistake again! lol

I've seen a few Acacia bushes in our desert by the side of the road going up the mountain but with all the construction going on many of the plants that were once abundant are becoming rare.

You're right @JudyEv so much of the desert I used to know has been destroyed and many of the animals that used to live there are gone too so now we don't even have eagles or very many hawks anymore. There's no where for them to hunt anymore.

@JudyEv Oh isn't it so beautiful! I haven't really seen wattle in quite awhile. Unless I have and I didn't take much notice! Plus, don't really go out much anyways but anyway, I love wattle. Beautiful! I'm glad you got the fuel card. There are some cards out there that I don't understand! It's like some gift cards I bought from K-mart or Target. They expire. It annoys me because it's still technically money. The cards shouldn't have an expiry date.

The wattle is truly a magnificent tree, so beautiful when in full blossom! I've never seen one before today. If there's still money on that card, they should allow customers to pay the remaining amount.

We call that tree "Mimosa Sensitiva" it is an acacia and those yellow flowers are the symbol of Women's Day (March 8th) here in Europe. I love those flowers, but the scent gives me headaches. You are right about using the small leftover amount on gift cards.

@JudyEv In France, on the south Riviera, there is a place where all the forests are covered by wattle trees, you can feel the smell passing on the highway inside your car, the place is called Bormes-LesMimosas.
