The Origin of the Wattle Tree

The other day, @JudyEv posted about being wattle season at Australia. For those of you who are like me, the wattle tree is actually another name for the acacia tree. But we didn't know why it was named wattle tree! That's why I made a story about why the wattle tree was named so. Oh, and @JudyEv inspired this story! Once upon a time, God looked down to Earth through a periscope from his throne. "Beautiful!" Said He. "Hey Gab, my humans are now surviving because of that invention of yours... that... uh..." "Tanned leather, sir." said his secretary, Archangel Gabriel "and that wasn't mine sir. That was Michae--" "But!" spake the Lord, "how come the people in this continent suffer death through hunger and kangaroo kicks?" "Ah. That, my Lord, was whe--" "They shall have none of it! Give them more animals to hunt and eat!" "Fine..." "What? Why are the humans being picked off by these... these emus?" God looked to Archangel Gabriel. "Why?" "Well, it's because--" "Speak! Do not mumble your words!" "I'm talking! Have you gone deaf???" And then God placed his hands to his ears and removed what looked like earplugs with wires. "This noise-cancelling earphones Mick invented does remove noise! So what were you saying?" Archangel Gabriel sighed once more. "As I was saying, the humans can't hunt well because they don't have trees that give the bark needed for tanned leather." "That's it? Then why didn't you say so! Okay okay, take out your tickler and make them this tree I'll tell you about." "Okay okay." "So to bless the good people of this continent, make this the tree that produces the best bark for tanned leather." "Okay..." "Oh, and make it smell good. Good enough to make perfume out of it." "Ooh. I like where this is going." "And give it long leaves. Not the wide ones like in China. Give it loooong leaves." "Okay... But why?" "That's so the tree can survive where the sun gets too hot." "Oh okay. Good point. What else?" "That's it." "That's it?" "Yeah." "What should we name it, then?" "Give it something cute. Like waddle-leaves or something." "But that's..." "I won't give it a name because I want YOU to give it one." "Ohh. Okay! I'll call it.... Wattles! Wattle tree!" "Gee... That's cute." I hope you enjoyed it!

I had never heard of the wattle tree. One of my kid clients feel in love with my wattle. It put a different perspective on the aging process. I told her if I were a tom turkey or a bull, my wattle would be a grand thing. Here were are, together.

What a cute young girl she is! I hope she grows up well. I've actually never heard of the wattle tree either, until @JudyEv made a post about it. By wattle, do you mean the folds that appear under the neck when we get older? I think they're cool, too. It's like a badge of seniority or something...
