Where does kindness come from?

I discussed this topic with my husband. I asked him about his perspective about where kindness comes from, and how we can get kindness.
This is what he told me:
Kindness begins with yourself. We can only be kind to others if we are kind to ourselves. Kindness is infectious, and the more you give , the more you get kindness back. It is simple to be kind to each others. If you're kind to yourself, it is easier to become kind to others.

or sometimes you're kind to others as substitute for not being kind to yourself.

Jesus and many other saints in this World were KIND to others for which they were crucified,
if you try to place a big fruit into the mouth of an alligator, it will open up to swallow you,
for deviants, a kind person is a weak person,
nobody can induce kindness in a twisted mind, for their kind manners are their masks,
