Instagram is one of the popular app, widely use by people for sharing their videos and photos.. I think it's been more than 3 years I have been part of it as I love sharing few pictures though my skills of photography is very bad
It is surprising that, unknown users or users with weird profile pictures, weird followers and following tried to send me direct message (DM)
"Hi Dear"
"How are you", How are you days"?.. Bla.. bla bla..
After seeing such messages, my first question is always ...this person didn't know me and I never come across with this person.. How this unknown strange person saying dear to me .. why they are concern how is me ..
Once I deliberately took time to check their profile as their account is not private I learn that his followers and following are only with weird users.. and some full of woman followers with inappropriate pictures .. this is crazy..
However, I have already learn a lessons 2 years ago when my account has been hacked for no reason.. I still asked my younger sister why that person hacked my account and upload all those photos when I only posted my own few travelling and animal pictures..
Anyway later on, my account was reported and retrieved and since then I change my setting as I am not crazy about likes and views but to share with own friends and few good people whom I come across through work ..
Some users are really crazy and insane also I think. They like to send message randomly and try to intimate with anyone.. I find it really scary ..

It happens with many more sites and those people who saying dear may are foreigner because they say many time love, honey and dear to stranger. Maybe it common for them. No need to reply this kind of user at any site. I don't like social sites or apps as they steal data and thus i also don't liked to share family photos too while i was using it.

I agree with you, they are master of stealing any contact.. however the screenshot method makes very easy use our photos and any contents

Yes, that may seem weird. Unknown people trying to connect with you seems unusual because you never did anything like that. In my opinion, that person is not weird, he's just different from anyone in your friend circle. Social media is to connect with unknown people, and find new friends.
I use Mental Models to understand why people say such things. By using it in your context, I guess that's the way he speaks to most people, or he just wanted your pictures to repost, or he simply wants to know about you.
I've had people who shout at me for no reason, but I just tell myself to calm down because they might have a bad day, or they're just the way they are.
I suggest you to read "Super Thinking" by Gabriel Weinberg. It's a great book on Mental Models which will help you see things from several perspectives.

I have instagram but I don't get such messages, I used to get on FB mostly from foreign nationals (I seem to be more popular abroad)
