Continuing my trivia series of favorite state songs with a couple more "A-listers." From the frozen North to the heat of the Southwest these two tunes cover a lot of territory...
So, will begin this journey with a ''little fish," ah, I mean a video track by the group "Phish."
Well, that was a real tasty tune! Makes me hungry for some "Baked Alaska,"
Now it's on to our trivia clues. Whodunnit?
1. This song was written about a state in the far north and recorded for a movie made in 1960 starring John Wayne. Though this artist had sung several popular movie tie-in songs, this was the first one that he sung over the opening titles. The song was also the name of the movie. This crossover hit topped Billboard magazine's Country Singles chart, and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Members of the Western Writers of America chose it as one of the Best 100 Western songs of all time. The song's lyrics sets up the introduction to the movie's backstory, the discovery of gold in the Yukon by the John Wayne character, and an eventual fight over his claim. There is an all-out brawl in the town's muddy streets in the climatic scene of this comedic film. The state this tune was written about was the 49th admitted to the United States.
Do you know the title of this movie/ song about one of our Northwest states and who sang it?
2. The artist of this group became very popular during the 1960's gaining teen idol status. Fun fact: The band he was a part of was produced by Terry Melcher, the son of actress and singer Doris Day. This artist took over complete control of the songwriting and production responsibilities for this group by 1968. Eventually, this band's lead singer decided to branch out and record solo singles. One of those tunes is today's mystery song, the one with a state title that was a top ten hit for this singer in 1969. Although the song's title appears to be about a U.S. state, it's actually the name of the singer's girlfriend. In the song he asks his girl, who is acting very immature, to discard her hippie trappings, including "hobo shoes", "rainbow shades", and "Indian braids", and become more realistic about life. However, his love for her overcomes him so much that he adopts her lifestyle too. The 60's pop/rock band this artist was the lead singer for achieved chart success with songs like Just Like Me" and "Kicks." The name of his group was Paul Revere & The Raiders.
Do you recall the group's singer and his 1969 hit with the state-titled name?
3. Bonus: Lets see if you can recall the name of the group who recorded this 1967 song with a state-titled theme.
In the song's lyrics the singer wants some whiskey and is searching for bar after bar to provide him some. The tune had a prophetic message as the LA band's singer did turn to alcohol and other drugs which eventually contributed to his death in Paris. The band's stage performance could be described as sometimes controversial, due to the singer's erratic behavior when intoxicated. You could say this singer's attitude really could "Light a Fire" among concert promoters and police security, as he was the first artist to be arrested in the middle of his performance.
Do you know the name of this singer and the California based band he fronted?
Ok, time to put yourself in the right "state of mind" and solve these mystery songs and artists. If your stuck and need additional hints just let me know in your response. Or as the group The Four Tops might say, "Reach Out and I'll Be There."
Thanks for reading and responding to my music post!!! Until next Saturday...

Well, no reason to get in a "state." #1 is correct #2- Ok, a little tip.. we know the title has to be a state with the letter "A." If you name the Southwestern state you've got the title. It was sung by the lead singer of a band who had a hit with this popular tune... (see video) #3- This group had hits like LA Woman and Love Her Madly. They really can Light My Fire, lol.
