Something New Trending on myLot?

Don’t shoot the messenger, but I’ve come across several discussions for which I have left comments. Some I never bothered to.
For a response, I’ve received a “like” and the very, very rare comment in return.
Am I wasting my time on myLot by responding to comments when a simple “like” will do?
Imagine the number of posts I could do in one day without responding to comments.
What say you?

The whole purpose for being a My Lot member is for socializing with various people, we like. A simple 'like' is a hasty response, that reflects disinterest in whatever we've said. Some members don't bother reading a discussion, which I don't understand.

@DianneN do you mean you leave a comment and they don't comment back at all? or just like your comment?

@MarymargII Yes, exactly that. And not just mine, but almost everyone else who responds.

As far as I know, we're also paid for the comments we write. As many members are on the site only to earn money, it's strange that they don't write comments because a comment may entice the writer of the post to go to the site of the commenter and do the same for them.
If never anything comes back, I give up writing comments for certain members. I've also given up *Liking* the posts of certain members because they've never ever come to my site. I don't see myself as a charitable society here which only gives but isn't interested in receiving something, too.

@DianneN The insight that one hand washes the other goes back to the Romans and the ancient Greeks! "Manus manum lavat" is a Latin proverb. It is the translation of a verse by a Greek poet.
I could name certain myLotters who've never felt the urge to wash my hands! So I've stopped washing theirs.

I agree. I've stopped responding and liking the steady stream of posts from those I never hear from ever again. I don't mind back and forth comments, but strongly believe that more than a like is being a good friend and myLotter.
I'm not here to earn a living, but I sure would like a response, even if it's a simple smiley face.
It's a two way street for all myLotters and as we say here in the US, one hand washes the other.

I try to comment as often possible, but there are times I’m sure I fall behind lol! I wonder if for some they are liking and not commenting due to language barriers!

No, that is not it. To be honest, you are one of the ones who never respond to my comments, I'm sorry to say. I have stopped replying to yours. I've tried many times to be kind, but perhaps in all the years I have responded, this may be the second time I have heard from you.
I've fallen behind in the past, and even wrote a discussion how sorry I was and promised never to do that again. I have since always responded to every single myLotter, even if it took me a few days unless I deleted a post by accident. I'm on the way to comment on your latest discussion. See how nice I am and how easy it is to do???

I just gave you a like .
Oh - just a like is no fun. I mean, sometimes I will do that if I read something but then have nothing further to say. But in most cases I will say something . . . sometimes too much . It is difficult dealing with the serial like-er though . . . I don't want to be one of those.

@DianneN Oh - ok - now I gave you a comment "like" . BUT not without a comment myself . Yah, anyone can press the like button and run . . . but that certainly ruins the party, right? If I see that as a pattern, I remember the name and not go back to that person . . . I don't like talking' to a wall .

What I say is that I always like every post I read but I certainly comment also. I might not have much of an opinion about something but I can say a few words or perhaps ask for more information. I know that there have been times after reading a post I have had no idea what to say so what do I put in the comment box? I say this has left me speechless. At least the person know I was there and that I read the post and did not know how to respond otherwise.

Thanks. Not just one, but quite a few - friends and not friends.
Some I understand and won't hold it against them only because they are dear friends. The others will never hear from me again. One hand washes the other on here. Most of my earnings go to our favorite charity, so it extra ticks me off.

@DianneN @Raelove @JudyEv When the internet was still young and writing sites came into being, I was on a German site on which people nearly burst with enthusiasm about the new medium. They forgot to go to bed when a comment thread was entertaining. I remember comment threads with more than 20.000 (yes!) entries. It didn't take long and nobody remembered the original post anymore.
Those were the days.
One didn't earn any money with comments, so such comment threads didn't ruin the sites. They all went belly up nevertheless because of mismanagement.
Does the name 'bubblews' still mean anything to you?

I have noticed that today Dianne. This is really sad when everyone will just like and no interactions besides that. I also feel today that I was wasting my 3 + hours here. Thanks for those who kept on interacting with me today, you know who you are. I kept on commenting and well, I am disappointed, to say the least. I think I will have a vacation tomorrow from here.
Goodnight! Enjoy the rest of your Saturday.

So sorry, but at least you know who is a good myLotter and who can be ignored. It's so frustrating. I wanted to let you know that you are not alone before you go to sleep. Goodnight. You have always been a dear friend and a wonderful myLotter. Sleep well and sweet dreams.

I always leave a comment for every discussion that is posted by one of the people I am following EXCEPT if they post many, many discussions in a day without much content. I tend to pass some of those by.

I totally agree with that!!!!
However, I'm talking about a comment you leave on a discussion. For example, the one you just left here. I could have just given it a like and moved on to greener pastures without responding. Those are the ones I find rude.

@DianneN That can be a bit rude but if the author is just gonna repeat in the comment what he/she already wrote in a comment to someone else's response to the same discussion isn't it better to just like?

@DianneN Sometimes I don't have anything to add. Is that rude? Then I'm guilty as well!

I'm sorry, but I've done the same thing, too. It makes me feel like a complete fool. Never again. I should begin a blacklist, although I know who to reply to and who not to reply to now. Sometimes I am weak and give them another chance, but the same thing happens. You are one of the best myLotters here.

Somehow I have felt that the interactivity has decreased in the last few days, except on a few discussions.
May be people are busier offline.
Or some folks have recently been so active here, that they have run out of ideas to discuss or respond to.

If you want to see fewer notifications, go for it. Personally, I think it's a bit on the rude side to respond with only a like. A comment makes it personal and like the responder cares. I care. I respond. I have 200 notifications.

@DianneN i like to read long posts or discussions. but i do that too, making long discussions. once i do not feel the sincerity of some commenters, or their comments show they did not read mine, i will just leave a like and visit their wall, and leave a like as well.

i noticed that too, but i don't mind it. i try to respond to everything even though some responses are impossible to respond to. but honestly, i think it's better to simply leave a like than to write "thanks".

@aureategloom I would just like it and move on. I get a lot of responses like that, but there's nothing to be done about them. They usually come from people from a certain area that don't even read my posts. I'm sure you know what I mean.

@DianneN but imagine if i wrote "yes, you're right" instead of giving more details - what would you reply to that? like and shoo
