Been paying attention? Then you know the top three. It doesn’t matter, I’m still going to post them, (a) I love them so much and (b) who’s been paying attention? Here’s today’s favorite from a Canadian artist.
#3: What in the World’s Come Over You - Jack Scott
How cool, he was from the first place in Canada I visited!! That’s Windsor, Ontario (also known as “south Detroit” in that insipid Journey song). Yes, that was my first trip to Canada. I went into a gift shop, where I bought some cool coffee cups that have hands for the handles. They fit together in a handshake. A Canadian flag is on one cup, and the American flag on the other, and together it has “hands across the border.”
But enough of that. Let’s talk about Jack Scott.
Born Giovanni Scafone in Windsor, “Jack Scott” was a lot easier to pronounce and quicker to say, so that’s what the world knew him as.
Scott had a great baritone voice and belted out the rockers (“Leroy” was another big hit) as well as the ballads (such as this one). His popularity was cut short by the rise of those mop tops from Liverpool, but how many others had that happen to them.
Scott maintained a loyal fan base and performed regularly on “oldies” shows right up until his death last December from a heart attack at the age of 83.
He was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011, given that he wrote the bulk of his own hits. That includes this one, which was in the 45 collection when I was a kid and got a lot of spins when I was in charge of the record player (which was usually).

Considering it’s right across from Detroit, I hardly consider it representative of Canada. Hopefully Canadians don’t think all of America is like Detroit.

No, he was considered more rockabilly...which, of course, had a lot of country elements in it.....
