Getting Involved in Politics

Like most people, I have only rarely been involved in a political campaign. Usually it has only happened locally, when I had a friend running for school board or something like that. Until recently, the only time I was involved in a political campaign was when Ross Perot ran in the early 1990s. He was a member of our church in Dallas. He and his wife invited church members to their home many times, and they were very active in church activities. When he ran for president, I doubted he could win, but I volunteered in his office, answering phones, anyway. He was a very gracious loser and threw a big party, even though he knew he was losing on election night. I was never involved in a political campaign again until two years ago, when my husband and I switched from supporting our Congresswoman who belonged to one party, and chose to support her competitor from the opposite party. It was a major change for us. Both candidates used my husband's photos in their advertisements, so he had to ask our former Congresswoman to stop using the ads that featured his photo, because we were now supporting her opponent. We were pleased when the opposing candidate won, with our support. Since she only won by a small margin, some of my friends have given my husband and me credit for making the difference, especially since my husband switched his support, we hosted several major events for her, made hundreds of phone calls, wrote post cards, made homemade signs, and sent out text messages, because she had a very small campaign budget. Her success made me realize that just a few people can make a big difference in politics. Now that I am in my 70s, I am surprised at how much I enjoy working on a political campaign. On a recent Zoom campaign meeting with our new Congresswoman, who is now running again, I chatted with a few young college students who are also working on her campaign. I told them that I hoped they were just as enthusiastic and interested in politics in another 50 years, when they are in their 70s, too. Two of our four daughters are now also involved in local and state politics in their communities. I am so proud that I raised a couple of enthusiastic activists! I think that no matter our age or political affiliation, it is important to feel that we can make a difference in our neighborhood and in our country. (The photo above is my husband and me, along with Katie Porter, the new U.S. Representative we now support.)

I remember that. It’s so nice that your daughters are also active in state and local politics. My daughter-in-law is also very active and is right now active in National politics with the Biden campaign. She last worked in the Clinton White House. I’ve thought of you often and hope your husband is doing well.

@DianneN - My husband is still hanging in there. He had a stroke in June, which was a major setback, but with physical therapy he has recovered to 90% of where he was before his stroke. He walks with a cane now, but otherwise seems fine. His other health problems continue to worsen, but slowly. Hopefully, he will be around for another couple of years. He jokes that he will be happy if he just lives long enough to vote Trump out of office. Good for your daughter-in-law for being active in National politics with the Biden campaign. I am praying that this time we do not have another November disappointment. I don't think I could take it again!

@DeborahDiane Your husband is a fighter. I love his sense of humor, too! I’m praying we don’t have another disappointment either. I know I wouldn’t be able to take it at all.

@JudyEv - We are trying to do what we can. I guess the one good thing that has come from the Trump presidency is that it really motivated us to get rid of him and everyone associated with him. We never felt so strongly for or against a president before. Thank you for saying my husband looks very handsome! I also wanted to mention that I love your new photo with your longer hair! Very attractive!

@JudyEv - I think a lot of people are worried that Trump will not accept a loss and will encourage his nutty followers to protest. That would be horrible for our country, so I hope it does not happen. The next three months (or 98 days) are going to seem like an eternity until the next election. I am just praying that it goes well. Trump has a lot of lawsuits facing him after he leaves office. They have been on hold while he served as president. He will lie and cheat, if he has to, to try to win this election and postpone these lawsuits.

@DeborahDiane I'm glad you like the new avatar. Thanks. There is talk on our news that the voters may not accept a defeat for Trump and that there would be more unrest. I certainly hope not.

You have been quite active! I remember that Perot started an IT company Perot Systems, which collaborated with an Indian IT company- HCL and one of my cousins used to work for HCL-Perot Systems, and got a chance to come to US for a few years. Having good people in political campaigns is a good plus, and very much needed. In India, good people normally avoid politics as sometimes there are even threats to life plus politics can be very dirty.

@DeborahDiane At times good candidates do not win due to lack of political backing. In India too, independent candidates rarely win and even some of them join some or the other national or regional party. At times I feel our democracies are highly controlled and manipulated.

@DeborahDiane Yes at times, we have to choose from whoever are available. Yet the harsh truth is that most countries without democracies or democracy only on papers are in fact much worse on many counts.

I've never gotten involved in a political campaign. But these days more than ever I do feel it is important to understand the whose and whats in politics and support the ones who will make a positive difference in our communities. It's wonderful that you are doing this! How are you and your family doing? I hope you are safe and well out there. We haven't been able to visit the Laguna area in months!

@DeborahDiane I'm trying to keep my kids "informed". They need to know what's going on with their country - and their world. If their futures are going to be in their hands, they really need to be aware . . . plant the seeds now! Glad to hear you and your family are all well. We are trying to do as well as we can - thus far we have been staying safe and healthy too. We have to wear masks here, and for the most part everyone does - but we see people on walks and hikes who just don't - especially now as it's quite hot. But we've been staying pretty strict about things - it's just a strange time in life. Take care out there!!!

@much2say - I'm glad to hear that you and your family have been careful. Keep it up! Since I last had my last conversation with you, we learned that the fiance of one of our daughters has tested positive for Covid-19. So far, he has a mild case and is recovering at home. However, our daughter and our two teenage grandchildren were exposed, so they are waiting to see if they develop any symptoms. Hopefully, they will all be OK, too. This is a really crazy time, and it is smart to keep your kids informed. We need an educated, well-informed populace if they are going to be capable of running our country in the future. You are so right!

@much2say - I agree that if there was ever a time to be personally involved in politics, now is that time. I am encouraged to see people of all ages, from senior citizens to college students, engaged in politics today. Our family is doing well, so far. Everyone has been spending as much time as possible at home. So far, no one has gotten Covid. I hope that continues, especially since there are so many tourists in Laguna who seem to think that if they are on vacation, the virus is on vacation, too. Very few masks around, except when they are forced to wear them. You stay safe, too.

@jaboUK - I am glad to hear things are getting better in Great Britain. I feel safe in our gated community and the nearby stores. However, very few people are wearing masks in other parts of California, especially the beach towns. I walk at the beach very early in the morning, and then stay at home the rest of the time, where I am completely safe.

@sallypup - Thank you! I am not on MyLot as often as I used to be. It is pretty time-consuming for $5. Also, there are a lot of other things I like to do. However, I enjoy the people here and I do like to pop in and see what everyone is doing.

@jstory07 - I know that voting can be complicated, which is why I avoided mentioning parties. In fact, I do not belong to a party. We are non-partisan voters, and often split our ballot. We want to vote for the person we think is honest and has integrity, and who will do the best for our families and the people we care about. Sometimes that is clear, and sometimes not.

And I'm sure you are feeling what we are all feeling about that bast*rd still living in the White House. On a side note, my daughter-in-law worked on the Biden campaign. Bless her soul!

@DianneN - Thanks for catching me up on your family news. I'm so proud of your daughter-in-law for working on the Biden campaign. We were thrilled to help Representative Katie Porter cross the finish line here in Orange County, CA. I spent so much time on her campaign, two of my neighbors asked me separately if she was one of our daughters! Katie and I chuckled about that. Then, I told our daughters on our weekly family Zoom call that they now have an unofficial sister! On another note, I cannot wait for our current occupant of the White House to go to Mar a Lago for Christmas and just stay there. It would give the staff more time to disinfect everything!

@andriaperry - I have found it is a stress reliever to support a candidate, especially when they win. No matter what, though, it makes me feel like I have done everything I can to elect people who I think will help others.
