How Is THAT For a Quick Payoff?

By the end of the week I will have paid off my car loan.
Okay, asterisk.
The dealership had a “special price” for financing through their financing company. At first I thought that’d be great, because I’ve had two cars through Honda Financial Services before.
It turns out that the dealership I bought my car from didn’t use Honda Financial. They used Wells Fargo.
As in, one of the biggest data breaches in history Wells Fargo.
Well, I went ahead and took the loan because it’s a couple of thousand dollars in difference. (What happens, from what I’ve read, is that the dealership gets a percentage of the interest rate kicked back to them from the “preferred lender” being used.)
But almost immediately I called my credit union to see about getting the car refinanced.
Yesterday I finally got my title in the mail. This morning I dropped it off at the credit union. Almost immediately I had a bunch of papers in my email inbox to sign electronically for the loan approval.
What are the benefits?
I get another month off (August) from car payments.
The payment went down a whopping — wow, what can I do with this money — $18 a month. Yeah, that’s not much, except spread out over the life of the loan. Then it becomes $1,300. (Or, the price of my trip to Florida last February.)
Very significantly for me, the money is now local. It’s out of a big corporation bank and in a local credit union. I’ve been a member of that credit union for nearly 30 years, and the personal service you can get locally (even with a mask on, the tellers know me) is priceless.
Most importantly, when the next data breach at Wells Fargo happens it won’t be my account in danger.

i am still nervous about Wells Fargo as well, i worry more about the scandal they had than the breach.

Yeah, in essence the breach was just putting out fire with gasoline (to quote a David Bowie song).

@DocAndersen Wells Fargo is the closest bank to me where I can get to on foot if needed and does well for me online. Now I am also getting my SS through them. Are there any other suggestions? Keep in mind that I am on my own and can only go anywhere on foot and I thought Wells Fargo was the bank in Florida.

@FourWalls yes their issue of moving and creating accounts their customers never knew about made me angry.
I was one of those customers (we bought a furnace for our house with 12 months same as cash. Paid it off and then were informed we had opened 3 more accounts.).

I hope it all goes well for you. Are you saying Wells Fargo is not good to use as a bank?

They had a huge data breach on 2017. And, there’s just not any personal service with those big banks. If something were to happen and I didn’t get my pension deposited on time I know exactly who to call at the credit union.

We been with a credit union for years. You're so right about the personal service. I went to ours recently (and I rarely go) and they were above and beyond about keeping everyone safe. It's hard to trust any big company now . . . car dealerships always seem kinda snakey anyways - you did some good financial shifting there!

Here I am! Still can't get to your other post, but this will have to do.
We belong to a credit Union, too, and are so pleased with them. That was a wise thing to do. The money in your pocket is better than in anyone else's.
We pay cash for our cars, but thanks for this post. Good to know.

Good information my friend. Thanks for sharing. But loan policies are different from each country
