Monday’s here! But the weather is terrific, so it’s not all bad. (And, before you ask, yes, even people who don’t work have “Monday syndrome.”) To start off the day it’s time for another song you may hear on the radio frequently and not realize that it’s “old.” Here’s today’s tune from 1980.
Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie
Hey, look, it’s that Major Tom dude again!
One of the things that made David Bowie so enduring was his ability to reinvent himself as music trends changed. If you listen to “Space Oddity” (where we’re introduced to Major Tom), it’s perfect for the late 60s. The song’s hero (and the song: “do you remember a guy that’s been in such an early song”) reappears here in a song that was also perfect for the time in which it was popular.
You can listen to them both together and hear the vast differences, yet enjoy the fact that they’re both unmistakably Bowie.
