How come some owners were are able to make their pet dog and cat live peacefully under the same roof?

While dogs can be considered man's best friend, the reverse is true when it comes to cats. And yet I have seen how some owners are able make their beloved dog and cat live and coexist without too much strife in the same home. I have heard that one way to make it possible is to let both the cat and dog dog grow up together while they were still babies. A few years back I tried to do the same and failed. Is there a secret tip to make my cat and dog pet accept each other and live together?

I once had a chow and a cat. I lived in a town home and the cat had the upstairs and my chow had the downstairs. It worked out pretty good because for some reason my chow didn't want to go upstairs. She was very protective, so I think being downstairs made her feel like she could protect us better.

My dog acts similar. For some reason, he likes to sleep near my bedroom door everytime I go to sleep. I think he just wants to guard the door.

I'm not exactly sure. It's a mixed breed I guess.

I'm not sure either. It's in their instinct.

Our cat was a couple of years old when we got a puppy and there weren't many problems. They usually got along well, but I remember one incident where the dog kept licking the cat. She hit him with her paw and walked way...

@JohnKu My dog stayed away from her and stopped licking her after she hit him, so I guess it worked I think that my dog might react the same way we brought a new cat into the house. I think it is easier when the cat is there first. We don't have a cat now, but our dog gets angry when the cat from the neighbour house visits our yard.

That's cute. Back in the day, my dog immediately attacked a cat I just brought home.

That is a good question since my sister told me when she adopted the last dog that was adopted as a puppy around 14 years ago, the puppy did not get along with the older cats for the first year until they became friends.

Hmm, I guess it depends on the personality of both parties then.

I heard this suggestion as well, but since I never experienced having a dog and a cat under the same roof, am not sure too if this one really works hahaha

It'd be nice if they could live peacefully under the same roof.

I don’t think they hate each other as badly as cartoons and comic strips have made us believe.

@JohnKu — oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Funny story: first time my aunt babysat my baby (the one in my profile picture) I was worried about the interaction between her and the two cats my aunt had. So I came in to pick her up and Freckles looked me with this guilty look on her face....because she’s snoozing on a blanket with the two cats!

Well, my dog once badly wounded a neighbor cat, so there's some truth in it.

She was immediately okay with those cats or they had prior experience beforehand? Like, if they had live together before.

Its a matter of luck and training too, if pets get proper training they can live happily together

I think it's their personality. If they don't by now, I don't think they will.

@JohnKu A mother hen can take care of several ducklings that she has brooded before.
