What Did The Garden Give Me Today?

My garden may have too many weeds, but the food tastes good any way. Today I used onion in the Butter Chicken recipe and cilantro on top. Boiled beets and peas on the side. And raspberries for the dessert. My most favourite time of the year- when I can gather my supper from my garden.

Everything you listed besides the butter came from your own garden?

I mainly mentioned the things from the garden. The butter chicken recipe has several ingredients. Only the onion and cilantro came from the garden. The side veggies came from the garden and the raspberries. A short time we get to do this, so I enjoy it.

@paigea I meant basically did you grow the onions, cilantro, beets, peas and raspberries. We didn’t water the raspberries enough this year so it didn’t bare any fruit.

@shaggin yes, those are the things we grew. We have a huge raspberry patch and it is not producing well for the second year

Flowers sound lovely. Hubby used to grow flowers. I was always a broke single parent so focused on growing food. When we were first together, I enjoyed the flowers a lot. Now, he likes growing the garden and only has a few flowers in pots.

@rebelann a few weeks after they bloom. And you can wait longer so they get bigger. We are eating our potatoes, but leaving the rest in the ground, so far.

My brother grows potatoes in a big pail. He says that works well. Lots of people are doing raised garden beds. As I get older I may start that. We do have strawberries and small tomatoes in large pots.

Isn't that wonderful to be able to harvest your own food? I would love to grow a garden if I didn't have such a heavy tree canopy (and shade) throughout my entire yard.

@paigea I’m pretty sure tomatoes need full sun to grow their best.

Our yard gets more shady every year. Maybe why the tomatoes are not doing well.

@moffittjc I will have to think where to put them next year. I should have done a sun study all summer.

That's a wonderful supply of homegrown yummies you have! I've only had cauliflower, leaf lettuce, beets, red peppers, and some herbs. I'm hoping my tomatoes make it.

@DianneN A few others have mentioned that. Tomatoes are one of the things that are do much better from the garden than from the store.

We enjoy it. I guess we could try growing even more variety. I enjoy gathering enough for supper. But today I need to do a thorough picking of beans and peas. Then shell peas, blanch and freeze peas and beans. That I do not enjoy. I do appreciate pulling them out if the freezer in the winter

That all sounds very delicious. It is good when you can grow your own things. Back in my garden in Latvia, we grew tomatoes, cucumbers, and potatoes.

We also have potatoes, but today we had rice. Tomatoes are not ready yet. Cucumbers we did not grow this year. Can you grow things where you live now?

Insects and other animals can be annoying. I don' t know if we've had enough heat for our corn to thrive.
