RIP Holly.

I'm in a sad mood today, for reasons I'll explain later, so I thought I'd do a sad post. As many of you know, my horse girlfriend (literally, my horse) passed away four or so years ago after 23 years together. She lived to be 35. I am a Faithful Horse, and I decided not to date (get another horse) for awhile. But then I met Holly. She was my music buddy Howie's girlfriend's horse up in Paradise CA. We chatted, there was mutual attraction, I haltered her up and brushed her and cleaned her feet, but I never did hop on her back. She survived the Paradise Fire (the "Camp Fire") and I as ecstatic. I thought she could be at least a "late life relationship." But apparently her back problems got too bad, and my friends decided to put her down several months ago. I didn't know her well enough to be "devastated," but I was very sad to hear the news. So now I'm sitting here, thinking about loss and separation, and I felt like writing about it. You get to "suffer the consequences." Or maybe you can relate to my feelings and feel "validated." On the brighter side, it's a hot and sunny day here, and I will visit the pool later. How is your day going?

I mourned Misty, my first dog for over 2 years. I still remember her but now the memories are brighter of the nice times we had together. It took me a lot to get Luna. I hope that she will be my last dog.

That's the way I feel about my own horse, the one who passed away a few years ago.

@DianneN Whether it's Doodles, Or Holly, or my Horsie of 23-years, we always remember our faithful fur friends. I'll go so far as to say they become a part of us.

Thanks, Michelle. I wish I had had a chance to hop on her bareback with a halter. That's my way of knowing if a horse is really comfortable with (and supportive of) me.

you can feel devastated, each new tear represents one for your first love lost, and one for the new potential love lost. it is ok, mourning is a hard thing in the human world...

@DocAndersen It is. And there are times when I'll intentionally listen to a sad song, just to induce the tears I've been suppressing.

I’m so sorry, and yet.....I understand the love it takes to break one’s own heart in order to relieve the suffering of a pet.

@BACONSTRIPSXXX I think our fur friends (and feathered friends) deserve angel wings and a harp just as much as humans.

I'm sorry to hear about Holly's loss. From time to time, the endurance riders have to put down a horse and it is always devastating for them, especially if they are lost through some trauma.

That would be hard on a rider, especially if trauma were involved.

@JudyEv I dealt with colic a few times. Interestingly, my horse coliced once, and it was on the same day I had a rare stomach flu. The vet had to stick tubes up her nose and butt, and she survived. I took a few advil and survived too. Talk anout synchronicity. The wisdom seems to change every few years. My default is to lead a horse, let them lie down, and then lead them (encourage them to walk) again.

@TheHorse Colic seems to take out a lot of horses. I'm not sure too many just quietly go to sleep but I hope they do.

I understand the pain of losing a pet. They really become a huge part of our hearts and lives. I am sorry that you didn't get on her and ride her for just a little while. She was a beautiful horse.
