Do You Get The Flu Shot

United States

I have never taken the flu shot. I was always told that it would give you the flu. Sada, one time she took it and got really sick. I have heard other people say that also. Already they are talking about covid and the flu. Schools that had opened, are now closing. I wish I could be like a bear, and hibernate and come out later.

To each his/her own. I get one every year and stopped getting the flu every year since 1986.

The only time in the last fifteen or twenty years ago I did not take the shot, I did get the flu but it was much milder. My pet theory is that if you get immunized every year and every year it is different strains you eventually get some immunity to all of them. I remember what the real flu felt like, like my bones were being ripped out of the sockets and my skin hurt and my fever was high and I had the worst headache ever. If getting a shot in September keeps me from feeling that way you can bet I will get the vaccine.

I've had some flu shots over the years. I've never got the flu from one. This is an old wives' tale.

Well, I don't know but it scares me to think about it.

I don't think it's an old wives tale, Malu, but it only affects a small handful that way. I've been gotten the illnesses a shot was supposed to guard against either. Also if people expect to get sick they might bring it upon themselves or some of the symptoms anyway.

For years, I would get the flu shot, and still get the flu. Then I sent ten years with no flu shot, and never got the flu. A few years ago the flu was so bad it scared me into getting the flu shot, and this time, I did not get the flu. So what to do? I think I'll try to get the flu shot again. There are so many strains of the flu I might as well try to head off at least one. The flu is always harder on us as we get older.

Wow, now you have a story to tell. You take care. Didn't know it was so many strains.

Never had it and have no plans of getting it, it's effective only against the most common strain in a particular season. Getting sick from shots is natural when body manufactures antibodies against a specific pathogen, degree just differs between individuals I think.

That makes a lot of sense.

I never did and it happens to get the flu from the shot. If your immune system is not at the top it could happen.

@popciclecold It happened to several people that they developed flu-like symptoms after the flu vaccine for a variety of reasons, including reaction to the vaccine. So they had fever muscle ache and other symptoms. I do not want to take the risk.

I've never had any flu shot because I can recover by myself when I get it.

The flu shot they give currently is made with killed virus. It cannot give you the flu. People who get the shot and then "surprise" get the flu have likely been exposed before getting it. I get one every year. I just got a shingles shot, and a Tdap as well. Some studies indicate that people who have gotten their immunizations like flu etc. have less severe cases of Covid if they get it. You are right though to limit your exposure. I know what the flu feels like and even if I get the flu after I have had a shot, because it is a different strain, I believe it would be milder. So I get the flu shot every year. I have had the two recommended pneumonia shots, shingles and Tdap.

I have never had one. I am usually only sick about 24 hours if I do catch the flu.
