Not $400, but $43

A couple of weeks ago the air conditioning in our car quit working. Bob at first thought it was "something" that I do not remember. He called about the part and was told the part alone would be $400.
He did some reading, and trouble shooting, and checked some fuses. Still no AC.
Bob bought the appropriate freon for our car at Wal Mart--$43. They would charge $100 per tank to put it in. He spent a couple of days trying but could not do it. He talked with Sid.
So yesterday, after doctor appointments, etc. we stopped by and saw Sid. It took about five minutes to put it in, and Sid did not want to be paid.
I am glad to report we now have AC in our car, for $43, not $400.
Good part of our week.

@GardenGerty Yeah, they do! I had a friend and also a former roommate who was kind of a Sid, and my son was too, but both are not available now.

@LadyDuck ONly worked a little while. Not going to be $400 to fix it, though.

That's a huge difference in price! Good thing you were able to save.

There is another problem as well, but it is not the $400 one.

It did not fix all of the problem, but we definitely do not need the $400 part.

It helped, but there is something else wrong. However it will not cost $400.

That is one amazing job done saving on repairs! I always love it when it is something that we can easily fix ourselves or with the help from friends.

@GardenGerty that is the thing, it never seems to have an end to what we actually need.

Sid is a man who in the evenings, after working his mechanical job in a manufacturing plant comes home and does car mechanic work. He has a completely fitted out shop with even a lift. It seems we still need another part, but it is far from $400.

We do have a/c in the pickup truck. The car still needs a little more but it is only driven a little bit until we do.

@simone10 The $400 part would be the compressor, It seems to be the "clutch" on the a/c.

@GardenGerty Back in the 80s, the a/c in my car went out. I wasn't lucky for it to be freon but I forget now what was wrong with it, a compressor I think. I was divorced and raising two kids alone, so I couldn't afford to get it fixed. That year, our summer was one of the hottest, and I was miserable. I drove that car around for many years after and never was able to afford to fix the a/c.

Nope. Only partial fix. We do need another part, but it is not the $400 one.

Turns out the freon did not fix it, but we still do not need the $400 part, so that is good.

And sometimes people have no idea what they are doing, and charge you for something you do not need.
