California Is on Fire

A Smokey Night During Fire Season

I know I'm not the only one here that's been affected by the fires. I took this photo a couple of days ago -- in the evening of the day our city of Paso Robles had the worst air quality of any city in the world. The smoke came primary from the Dolan fire in the Big Sur area just north of us. It pretty much disappeared by yesterday. We are also praying the fire in Carmel Valley will be out soon. We have one home we rent out there that was in an evacuation zone, but the tenants and the home are safe so far. The smoke I hope all of you are okay. I've been busy selling books. This is my busiest season and I've had no time to write anywhere. Do you have any wildfires burning near you? Have you been personally affected by any of them? Have you managed to stay safe against Covid-19? So far we've escaped getting that, too.

Life in our state is just about back to normal. We're very lucky.

Glad to hear it. Are you speaking of Covid or did you also have wildfires? I haven't had much time to keep up with anything but local news in weeks.

Both yesterday morning and again this morning we had a fire in a homeless camp in the riverbad about a four block walk from my house. Fortunately they got the fires out before they spread into our tract or another one. No one was hurt.

@DocAndersen It is. Especially since the homeless camps in the riverbed are so close. When the law goes in to move the homeless and their possessions away, they move back in a few days later. It's sad for everyone. They are in the process of building a new homeless shelter.

The fires here are gradually being contained, but they still have a bit to go. The smoke is gone. You stay safe from Covid, too. What kind of regulations has your government imposed to help keep you safe?

@bagarad glad to hear that is being contained. We have strict implementation of social distancing, wearing mask and face shield

It's still hazy here in the Bay Area (East Bay), but I can see shadows right now. The smell was strong this morning. It is not as strong now (3:30 PM).

Our smoke here has pretty much gone. Most of the fires are almost 50% contained now. But a gentle rain would be nice.

@bagarad I'm glad we have some cooler air, even if it means we didn't get to do an evening swim tonight. A light rain would be nice.

@TheHorse It's the humidity that's getting to me. Makes it seem hotter than it is.

None here thankfully. I have been watching these fires on the news. Lost my uncle in July to COVID. Stay safe.

I'm so sorry you lost your uncle. So far I've not lost anyone I know personally to Covid. Our county has not been as hard hit as many other California counties, for which I'm thankful. But our cases have been going up this month. Today they were beginning to come down again.

@sophie09 I can't imagine living where floods are common. Our biggest disasters here are earthquakes and fires.

Fies have on occasion gotten close to us and it is scary, but hurricanes and tornadoes are very scary. Earthquakes aren't much fun either, but my experience so far is that cleaning up after one is much easier, if the building remains standing, than cleaning up after a fire or flood.

Germany is not so hot and dry. There aren't such big fires. I remember wildfires from Italy, though.

Fires and bad weather remind us we aren't in control. So do pandemics.

I have family in the Santa Clara area, the Santa Cruz mountain area, and in northern California areas. I pray for their safety and for days of soft steady rain. It is so scary and new fires are starting every day.

I have never been near a firestorm since I live in Louisiana. The main problem living in Lake Charles these days are Hurricane Laura that could hit my city tomorrow evening.
