I usually dont open mail from people that i dont know or email adresses that I dont know. That way the spammers thinks your mailbox is not active.
once you open it they start sending you all kinds of spam.

The best way to avoid spam getting mixed up with your important email is using two different addresses. Use on for you important, personal messages, and set upp another one (hotmail or gmail for example) that you use for enything comercial och anything you enroll in via the internet. Ex for registering for newsletters, offers, or sites lite mylot. This will at least keep the bulk of the spam from getting mixed up with the important emails in your first address!
To stop spam in that address, there is usually a spamfilter that you can chose to use, usually with different levels. Set it to a resonably high level, and make sure you check back to the spam-folder every now and again to make sure no important messages get stuck in the filter.
Also, I fink that spam comes in waves. One week I can recieve 30 or 40 spam mails, usually very similar to each other, and then the next week I only get one or two.
Good luck!
