Our flagpole is functional again

After about 14 years, the cord on our flagpole disintegrated so we haven’t been able to fly our flag for a while. Today, we decided it was time to replace the cord.
Firstly, we had to lift the flagpole out of its ‘sleeve’. The flagpole sits six metres out of the ground with another metre in the ground.
The pole itself is a piece of aluminium irrigation pipe and very light. It sits in a PVC sleeve which is cemented into the ground. We had trouble lifting the pipe out of the sleeve. In the end, we drilled a hole horizontally through the pipe, placed a bolt through the hole then used a piece of galvanised pipe as a lever to, firstly, get the pipe to move in the sleeve. We were then able to gradually work the pipe upwards.
We lifted the pipe out of the hole, I held the base while Vince walked backwards supporting the length until it reaches ground level. Although it sounds complicated, it is easy enough. The cord has now been replaced and our flag is flying again. And now we’re waiting for Vince’s sister and her husband to arrive.

That's great that after all that work you were able to get the pole out of the ground and the cord replaced. People will now be able to admire your pirate flag as they drive by or come to visit!

@moffittjc That is one flag we don't have yet. But when you visit we'll buy one.

very patriotic flying a flag at ones home - we noticed it in many of the European countries and I know the USA have in every yard - didn't know it was an Australian thing as well.
Glad to hear the pole if now functioning rather than laying low.

That is a patriotic thing to do, I do enjoy seeing national flags flying, I, however, have only a seasonal garden flag.
