I think we all have our guilty pleasures mine are soap operas. I know how crazy they are and yet I love them anyway. It's funny when I have conversations about them out loud because if someone came in halfway through our conversation and didn't know what we were talking about they'd think we were crazy.
I only have one that I currently watch but I used to watch four of them but the other three went off air. I only watched the one briefly but the others I stayed with for a long time. As much as I love them I also know how outlandish they are. I also used to like Grey's Anatomy which may be primetime but it's still a soap opera. I'm sorry but that many crazy things are super unlikely to continuously happen to the same people. At least they don't kill people and bring them back to life or replace actors and expect you to play along I guess.
There are several bigger stars that got their start on soaps so it's not all bad acting just over the top drama at times...ok most of the time. I love seeing soap fans get so worked up over something they should have known was going to happen at this point "I'm going to stop watching I've seen so and so die for the last time I am tired of them removing all of my favorite characters!" I'm like it's ok they'll be back eventually hardly anyone stays dead. I just kind of go along for the ride. I know what I got myself into so I don't complain too much. I have moments too though.
I am also amused by the things people find unrealistic in these things myself included. I remember watching where a guy who was supposedly dead came back from being stuck in a Turkish cell for thirty years and I was like "So a man with no money suddenly has an expensive suit and knows how to use a cell phone?" Never mind that I acted like it was completely normal that the character that had him locked up used the man for information to pretend to be him to get a mututual love interest. He used the man's face to make a mask that made him look and talk just like the guy he had locked up. I didn't question that I questioned where he got the suit and phone lol. It's like I can only suspend my belief for so much but darn it that suit is going too far! I realize the absurdity of the way I think believe me. It amuses me when I think about it. Soap fans are a crazy fanbase. We know how crazy what we are watching is and go along with it anyway.
It's a pretty loyal fanbase but definitely isn't a super large one although I'm always surprised when I find other people that watch it too. We often talk and laugh and vent at the situation they're currently in. I don't know there's just something about them that keeps me watching. It's not remotely realistic even though it sort of portrays it like it is. It's not a scifi thing where you expect it to be unrealistic but yet you know it is unrealistic. Although Passions was a soap opera that didn't pretend to be normal. I guess it's nice to have something where you can watch and forget your own problems.

I have only ever watched American soap operas but I'm assuming no matter what country they're from they are probably pretty similar. I can't say I remember an Alejandro in any of my soap operas but there was a guy named Alexander but went by Zach in one of them because he changed his name. He wasn't well built but was nice looking in his own way. Maybe if I went back far enough I'd find one. The soap opera I watch currently is over fifty years old and the other ones I watched were on for decades too so at some point there could have been an Alejandro. I don't remember an aunt finding their nephew attractive but one of the soaps I watched had half first cousins get together and I was a little grossed out by it lol.

I stopped for a while because I got busy and back when I stopped we didn't have things like DVR or Hulu to catch up on them. That came out a year or two after I had stopped for a brief time. I mean they may have had DVR but we personally didn't have it.
