What Does "True North" have to do with "Canada"?

My mom sent me a souvenir mug from a trip to Canada. It has a lot of words Canad-themed words written on it---Poutine, Tim's, July 1st (their Independence Day), etc.
I noticed a couple were "True North" and "True North Strong," and I looked up- but can't find what they're talking about.
(There's the idea that they are 'the True spirit of the North'--a lot like we Oklahomans say we're the true spirit of the West (even though we're actually 'smack-dab in the middle, just south of Nebraska).)
Can you clarify this a little?

I hope that I can help you some of this, I do live in Canada.
The True North is something that the Raptors made 'famous'.
The true north strong are some of the lyrics from Oh Canada.
If you do a search on the lyrics to Oh Canada you will find these words, and what the Raptors had in mind when they picked up the True North idea is unknown to me as I do not follow sports. They may have been making reference to the lyrics.

Kinda like people use 'Dixie' & 'Dixieland' to refer to the American South (which is actually more its Southeast, as 'Dixie' doesn't really refer to the area from West Texas thru California)---words made popular by the old song "I Wish I Were in Dixie."

@mythociate Except that the true north are actual words in our country's song, Oh Canada. Is Dixie referred to in the US song?

That's what I'm saying---why are "true north" and "true north proud" written on my mug (that's covered with 'words about Canada')?
Maybe someone explains here later.
