My, but aren’t I up early? Yes, and I’m getting ready to fix that. As soon as I finish my breakfast I’m going back to bed until the flood advisories expire. That doesn’t mean I won’t sing in my sleep. So, hey there, you sing along with this song that has “hey” in the title.
#8: Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye - Steam
The 60s were magical times. We had a lot of non-existent bands hitting the charts. Among them: the Archies, the Ohio Express....and these guys. Well, they did sort of exist: as three different Bridgeport, Connecticut-area bands.
When the single was released (this was originally the B-side, with the intended “A” or “hit” side being “It’s the Magic in You, Girl”) the guys who recorded it needed a name for the act, so they said “Steam.”
This wasn’t steam, it was a downright fire. The song became a #1 hit in late 1969. (It was also a top 20 R&B hit.). Additionally, it’s a downright iconic song (the chorus, anyway) in sporting events: when the pitcher has given up six runs in 1/3 of an inning he’ll get serenaded to this song as he’s replaced for a reliever. Let someone foul out of a basketball game and guess what they’re gonna hear.
Lead vocalist Gary DeCario passed away in 2017. I hope they didn’t play this at his funeral.

I have to tell you that I got really sick of that song. It's repetitive to begin with, and for some reason the radio seemed to be playing that at all times on all stations LOL. There was just so much better music in 1969.

True. It was, though, rather indicative of the “bubblegum” music of the era.

as a long-suffering cubs fan, we dreaded the Cardinals playing this song when we were in STL!
