I'm helping a friend choose a guitar today.

He's actually the father of a friend who was my student at the College some 15 years ago. He came here to escape South Africa about a year ago, and will be moving (with his wife) to Germany in a few months. Her family is originally from Germany. He and I were swapping songs at a BBQ the other night (I brought one of my guitars). Anyway, he's a good guitar player and singer, as well as a drummer. He wants to buy an acoustic-electric guitar that he can play here and then take to Germany with him. We're going to head to Guitar Center today to see what's out there. I hope they have some nice Martin DX1Es there. Those are good quality inexpensive Martin acoustic-electrics.

@DocAndersen Yeah, you probably don't need an acoustic-electric. Once in a blue moon, I plug my Collings OM-1 into my Fishman amp and "blast," but I mostly play pure acoustic around the house.

Taylors are good. Which model do you have? It's worth it it to have one (an acoustic-electric) if you're going to "play out." Or if you're interested in different "effects."

@TheHorse i will have to go look and see what the model is. I use it for me to play around with. I haven't played for a human other than my wife and kids in many years.

@FourWalls Well, we had to barter a bit to get the bottom E-string. I told the salesman I would teach his part-time-model daughter (who plays classical violin and studied musical theory in college) about the nuances of good love-making if we got that bottom E-string. He went for it. I think we got a good deal. (Dang it, I have to stop eating Stroganoff!)

I suppose he is going to buy the amplifiers in Germany, so no electric problems.

@TheHorse Electric guitars amp are available in all European countries. There is a guitar shop not far from us and I have seen amps for sale at a very wide price range. A good Fender Mustang would cost the same price he paid for the guitar, but there are many cheaper.

@LadyDuck Thanks for the info! At Guitar Center, he was playing through a $700 tube amp. I'm not sure what he's going to want to spend when he gets to Europe.

Exactly! He DID buy a guitar yesterday--he fell in love with the Gretch, and it only cost $500. We played it through a nice tube amp, and it sounded great. I'm sure he can find that amp in Germany.

@LindaOHio I'm gonna bring my amplifier out to their house so we can "jam." I have an acoustic-electric guitar here that plugs in (it's actually the one shown in the photo).

@Bensen32 It should be fun. Hey, do you want to hear one of my acoustic finger-picking songs? They're "in the cloud," but I can forward a link. That's my favorite style. I get nothing if people listen. That's my favorite style, but it's not the kind of thing you can jam with others to.

@TheHorse I'm jealous, I never learned to play but I do like to listen to some good guitars jamming out.
