Life's not fair, is it?

One gospel story I struggled to understand is about the laborers who worked for twelve hours in the vineyard and complained about why they received the same wages as the others who came late in the day. I would have complained, too. That's not fair. Twelve hours is twelve hours. Why would someone who worked for just an hour receive the same wage? Many times we complain about unfairness. We work like crazy and yet the beggars on the streets do not even work and we give them our money. But that is it. Life is not fair. We are the privileged few. Yet we compare ourselves to beggars who are impoverished. That alone is unfair to the beggars.

Life is unfair but it doesn't have to be that way. Some people see the glass half full while others half empty. I think changing our views of life thinking optimistically and stop comparing and complaining, life will give us more blessings. In fact, we all create our destiny. We shape our circumstances from the way we think. Things materialize whichever it is because we focus our thoughts on it.

Yes, the lowly people, being more at a disadvantage in securing jobs or work, deserve to be given more.

No, life isn't fair. It's never going to be. You can't please everyone. That just doesn't happen. If you're the best you , you can be, then does it matter how fair or not the world is?

But life is already a blessing, or a gift. How could life be unfair?

@DianneN Without the downs and ups, life wouldn't be life at all. As we fail, so we succeed. As we grieve, so do we feel joy. I was watching the aftermath of the havoc that the fire reduced to ashes, people left with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Good thing that people have become compassionate, and we don't have to call the unfortunate victims beggars, because shelter and care could be given. But beggars are as many and as real. That is correct, we must not compare our lives to the beggars. That is not fair. The beggars need compassion. So we help them as much as we can.

@eileenleyva True, but life has its ups and downs - births, deaths, employment, unemployment, poverty, wealth..... I have never compared myself to the life of a beggar.

I'm guilty of the thoughts sometimes but I try to reflect back and then thankful that despite all my struggles, I'm still able to feed myself every single day.

The manna in the desert was only for the day. That is how God wants us to be. Do not take more for tomorrow. Just eat for today. As St. Francis of Assisi said - look at the sparrows, they live for the day flying in wonder, and the good Lord provides for them, how much more for us?

it is not important that life is fair or not, the more important thing is that we always try to be fair for everything.

That is wise. Follows the Golden Rule. Be fair and you will be given fairness, too.

The remonstrating against what someone does to us is never good, as we should see that the person holding the load is not apportioning it according to the load, but as he sees fit. As we see fit is never fair until we can see fit in God's way, but as this story shows, we probably will never be able to see in God's way, and so we will usually be disgruntled, when his way is not our way too.
