Took the bus for first time during pandemic

Yesterday was hubby's grandmother's 85th birthday plus their gold anniversary. Everyone decided to get together at a park by the water to celebrate. Since hubby was at work (he'd be joining after) I had no choice but to get there on my own. I had to walk about 45 minutes to my first bus. The wait for the bus was about ten minutes. It was around a half hour ride and then I had to transfer to another bus. The second bus was leaving as I neared the bus stop, so I had to wait for the next one. That ride took about 45 minutes. I didn't really time myself when I left the house but from previous trips to that area the commute was probably close to 2.5 hours. It was tiring. At least the weather wasn't that bad. Wasn't too hot or too humid or rainy and windy. It was my first time riding a bus during a pandemic. The last time I took a bus (or train/subway) was mid-March. Masks are required to ride public transportation. I wasn't sure how I'd manage being in a mask for a long time as it is hard to breathe in a mask and sometimes I get hot but it turned out to be ok. I didn't really wanna hold on to anything but could not as there were no empty seats on the first bus. When I got to the park there was nowhere to wash my hands. I made sure my hands never touched any food just to be safe... There was also nowhere to pee and I had to hold it in until I got home. After hubby and I got home, I got a call from my mom. I told her where I went and that I took the bus to get there. She was pissed, especially when she found out I didn't have hand sanitizer on me. I never use it. I can't stand the smell of it. And I hate it on my hands. I told her everything is okay. She shouldn't worry. I had no choice but to take the bus if I wanted to be there with his family.

You were brave and really kind to ride a bus to celebrate your husband's grandmother's 85th birthday. I would be scared to ride a bus.

@lovebuglena I am sure that his grandma was very touched. What scares me on the bus are the kids, because they are not obliged to wear masks.

I was hesitant. And I didn't really wanna touch anything. But I couldn't ride the (first) bus standing up and not holding on to anything. I could've fallen if the bus jerked or made a sudden stop. I had no choice but to hold on to the railing or whatever that's called. At one point a seat opened up and I did get to sit down. Luckily, on the second bus (it was its first stop where I got on) I was able to get a seat, so didn't need to hold on to anything.

I wanted to be there with everyone and I also didn't want to be home alone so I had no choice but to take those buses. And his grandma was very touched that I came.

Wow! You certainly went to great lengths to be there for your grandmother. I always carry hand sanitizer. Too bad you couldn't take an Uber there.

Not my grandmother. Both of mine are gone. It was hubby's.

@DianneN It's ok. My grandfathers are no longer here as well. No one was around to be at my wedding.

Thankfully, the buses were not crowded. And no one was on top of each other.

I wouldn't fancy a bus ride under present conditions, but I can understand you wanting to be there for a special occasion.

Would have been great if hubby came home to get me and we'd go together in the car but that option was not possible.

October 10th my niece is celebrating her 16th bday at a restaurant. It is also on Saturday. Hubby works so I will have to go there on my own. The same commute. Same buses. Just getting off earlier on the second bus. There is a slight chance that my parents will be going there as well. If that is the case I can go with them.

@lovebuglena Let's hope your parents go - that would be so much easier for you.

Buy a box of Wet Ones and keep some packets in your purse. They're just antibacterial; but it's better than nothing.

Your intention is good but your mother didn't want you to get sick.
