Can I use you?

Those are the words that lay between the lines of a request that I received yesterday. I had just walked into my bedroom and put my fitbit back on my wrist when my phone dinged with a text message. The number was unknown to me, but the request was one I have received several times before. "Can you petsit for us while we're gone?" I didn't know whether it was my brother in law or my nephew, but there was no mistaking that it was one of the two. I have their phone numbers programmed into my phone, but I"m guessing they got a new phone and a new number since the last time I talked to them (which was January, maybe?) I do feel used, but I am getting paid and I would never leave a dog to fend for itself, which might be what happened if I didn't agree to petsit

I understand how you feel. I couldn't leave a dog to fend for itself.

The dog in question is such a scaredy cat too.

@LindaOHio I'm more of a cat person, but I love dogs too. My fur nephew (my best friend's dog) is my favorite of all though. He's a sweet border collie. He slept outside my room when I was dog sitting a couple of weeks ago.

Oh that is using. Since you haven't talked to them in months. But like you said you are being paid and don't want the dog alone.. would be a tough choice for me

I almost said no. If it hadn't been for the dog, I would have.

@Courtlynn I actually hate having to go back and forth each time, but I'll do it anyway.

You are a good person to do that. I would probably do the same paid or not. My daughter has been doing that for a friends parents. When the lady was going for Chemo Aarika would go let the dog out to potty and run around for an hour or so 3 times a day.

I'm doing it more for the dog than for them. I actually hate having to go there twice a day when their gone, but I do it anyway. I pet sit for my best friend too, but she lets me stay at her house because she lives further away. It was good of your daughter to do that for the friend's parents.

I have had people in my life like that. Yes, the dog genuinely needs you. He/she probably loves you.

Actually, the dog is a skittish creature. They used to have three dogs but I am not sure what happened to the other two. I tried texting my nephew on his graduation day and on his birthday, but nothing. They only reach out if it benefits them.

I probably would have said yes too but can't say I wouldn't be annoyed if this was the first time in months they contacted you.

Yeah, I texted my nephew on his birthday and on his graduation day and he didn't respond. I'm guessing that his number changed, but it would have been nice if he had told me. I'm only doing this for the dog, not so much for them.

True, and I already know what the money will be used for.

@GardenGerty No, actually. I'm going to either use it to get a costco membership or to start getting some things for the floor couch I am making.

I think you first need to figure out if who it was

I know it was one of my relatives, it doesn't matter which one sent the text.
