Coronavirus games

One way to keep in touch with relatives we can't visit in person is to contact them online but, sometimes, the conversation can run dry, especially with children. How can we solve this? One way is to play online games. There is a huge choice of online games but many of them seem to be the shoot-em-up type of game with guns, explosions and bad guys to kill by the dozen - not my cup of tea at all.
So how about more traditional games? Chess, for example; a game of strategy which exercises the mind and teaches, amongst other things, forward thinking and planning ahead. Since the early days of lockdown in the UK as coronavirus began to run riot I have been teaching my grand-daughter (she is 14) how to play chess. Since she lives some distance from me this has had to be online and we play at least three times a week. She has now progressed to the point where she can beat me on a regular basis (she does admit that she has had an excellent teacher)!
There are many other online games available (we also play yahtzee, othello and checkers). So, if anyone is interested in playing online games with distant relatives this is the site we use (I should point out that I have no connection with the running of this site which is free to use):

If your student is able to beat you then you have taught her well.

I think I've heard of that. Yes, I agree online gaming has become more popular. I don't do a whole lot of it, myself. Mostly mobile games.

I prefer using a laptop but I will admit that it's largely a matter of preference

That's a great way to stay in touch...and your granddaughter now knows how to play chess!
