Religions and the image of god.

November 2, 2020 10:01am CST
I believe that it all started with a simple man who was looking for answers. Searching for the whole picture the secrets and the real forces at play. And then he found it and saw for example a god. But what I believe is this supreme consciousness that showed up in another form. Probably showed up like what perfection looked like to that person. And this person had gone somewhat public with this and he found people who resonated with that picture of god. Ultimately this became a religion. What's your thought on this? What does god look like in your opinion ?

First: which religion and which God? For Christians "God created man in his own image", so there are no doubt about how he looks like. Some religions have more than one God and they represent their Gods in the shape of animals (Indian as an example). Muslims avoid visual depictions of Muhammad or any other prophet such as Moses or Abraham.

Yeah Muslims are more rational that way. I like the monotheism part of their religion.

@LadyDuck For me religion is like a prop that gives you light of hope. But when it turns into something which causes ethnic cleansing and wars , I would rather discard such a religion.

Nearly all of the images or descriptions of God depict Him as being like a human. In other words, most people, even if they do have something approaching a true idea of who God is, choose to imagine Him in their own image. That may well be how He wishes to be seen by most people because anything approaching the real appearance would simply blow their mind. In fact, there are a few who claim to have been shown the real 'face of God' and have come out of the experience clearly damaged in some way and were never the same again. As for me, I know that He is happy with the way that I most often choose to picture Him as a kind old gentleman in white robes with a long white beard. He knows and I know (and He knows I know) that that is not the 'real' Him, but it'll do for now.

@MALUSE That rather suggests that God is actually hermaphrodite - both male and female - and that raises all sorts of questions!

I don't even know if I believe in a god. I absolutely agree with humans looking for answers. Science wasn't as advanced then as it is now so humans came up with gods and, later, organised religion. I think organised religion was a way of getting power over people.

Totally agree with the power thing. But I also believe there are some people working with true faith and not for money. (Talking about religion)

@BadMaximilian A true faith in what??? A religion provides someone with something to believe in. If said religion was not there what would their belief be with no pre constructed religion? If you said you believed in the sun and worshipped it as a god I'd say ok I can see why. If you said you believed in trees as some form of god I can see why.

All religions, arts and sciences in this world originate from the same tree branch. Your topic is too heavy for me. Thanks.

Um, no. What the guy saw was other people who could do stuff for him. But he realized they won't do the stuff for him (for FREE) unless they're related ... so he invented an imaginary being he could call Their Father---they've got the same Father, making them brothers & sisters; and you ALWAYS wanna do favors for your brothers or sisters, right?

All religions are inventions, and Mankind has been very inventive! As you say, it is all about looking for answers - in ancient times virtually every question had a religious answer, and gods were invented that caused just about every phenomenon you could imagine. Over time, the number of questions diminished and so did the gods. However, there are still gaps, and "the god of the gaps" is still called upon for the answers by millions of people!
