This election is unlike other elections. We've had early voting in many states (including mine) More mail-in ballots than usual. And, since those aren't electronic, and (even the polls use paper ballots) they still need people collecting them, counting them and it's just taking forever.

I find the practice of "calling" an election in the US to be a very strange one.
We certainly don't do that in the UK, where I regularly count votes in local elections - both for local and national government positions. Nothing is announced until every last vote has been verified and counted - we would not dream of ignoring a load of votes because one of the candidates was way ahead of the rest.

All votes ARE counted and DO count. The electoral college system accounts for the total number of votes for whichever candidate in each state. If a candidate wins the popular vote in the state, the candidate wins the state and gets the electoral votes. Granted, it is possible that someone can win the electoral college and not win the popular vote. But what the electoral college system allows for is fair representation in each state according to ITS popular vote.
