Woke up to a halo in the sky

I woke up to a halo in the sky. I looked up at the sky, and although it looks very hazy, it was rather blinding! The Botswana Meteorological Services Facebook page said it's caused by the interaction of light rays with high-level clouds/cirrus clouds (ice crystals). Our traditional elders say it signals heavy downpours or snow. I guess it'll be the former, seeing as we don't get snow here. Have you ever seen this? And how's your day going today? Whatever you're doing, enjoy what's left of your Sunday :)

I'm surprised many people who've commented have never seen it before. I've seen it a couple of times before. I know what you mean - beautiful but eerie at the same time. It freaked me out the first time I saw it hahaha

@crazyhorseladycx After I posted it here, we had a mini storm but nothing like I'd expected. It was way louder and more electric than it actually was. Right now, it's blowing up a gale like it might rain.

I guess it wasn't snow. It's beautiful, but I don't recall seeing anything like that. I have seen plenty of snow, however.

No, it wasn't snow but we've had quite a lot of rain over the last few days since we saw the halo I had my fill of snow when I lived in the UK I'm surprised a lot of people have never seen a halo.

It really is pretty! but it wasn't easy to look at because it was too bright, or rather the glare hurt the eyes.

I have seen them on rare occasions both around the sun and then I have seen it around the moon and was told as a child upon seeing one around the moon to count the number of stars you see inside the halo and it will tell you the number of days before rain.

@Lushlala It's so amazing and beautiful. I remember when I was little I saw this and it scared me so much because I had never seen it before. I thought something awful was going to happen. But now I know the reason behind it and always find it very fascinating whenever this happens.
