I'm afraid of my oven

I bought my stove/oven seven years ago and all newer models sold here have the self-cleaning feature. I heard that when that feature is working the temps are very high. I'm afraid to try to clean the oven that way as I don't want to burn down my house.
After reading a blog article on it I think I'll clean it the old fashioned way, with oven cleaner and mr clean sponges.
If you have a self cleaning oven do you use that feature?

Ok. I'll probably have to give it a try soon.

@DianneN I figured that. Do you run the overhead damn while it's in the cleaning more?

Jj says if it's well vented and installed correctly it should be fine.

@thelme55 ah, mine might not be ventilated. I'll have my brother check it one day. He's a licensed electrician.

I've rented many apartments and houses and always cleaned it at least before moving out again. I always used the spray for that then.

I've never heard of that before. Are you joking?

I'm going to have my electrician brother check it out before I use it that way.

I guess I'll talk to family in the area and see their thoughts on it. Maybe it's not as bad as the blog claimed but I think I'd want to make sure there's no grease on the bottom of I do use it that way sometime.
I figured winter to be a better time but the blog also said to open windows for the fumes and that defeats doing it in the winter.
When do you do yours?

@CarolDM I use pans underneath droopy foods and most of what's there is char but it's want to be sure if I end up doing it that way.

@MarshaMusselman As often as it needs it. I am careful not to let anything drip to the bottom.

The best thing to do about it is to sell it off and get a newer model.

No the newest models have the self cleaning options too.
I just need to clean it the old fashioned way.

I don't think I could have bought anything without a self cleaning option. I may have to update my kitchen before using it that way.
