No room for plagiarism.

Please mylotters, this site might be an income earning site and many have joined in for the money.
But, the terms of agreement require us to post our own original discussions, not copy/paste nor plagiarize someone else's work. Shame on you.
There are all sorts of topics under the sun, and mylot allows the same posts about the weather and the coffee, so long as the posts are your own originals.
Please don't copy from magazines, too, or book cover flaps, because it is just too obvious the words are not your language.
Mylotters bear with grammatical errors, typos, erroneous presuppositions, incorrect inferences, but blatant plagiarism is not tolerated.

Well said, Eileen!
I think you have covered nearly everyting I would have said. I only need to add that:
1) we do rely a great deal on users to spot instances of plagiarism The proper way to deal with it is to report the post, but we would prefer that you do not respond or comment about it being plagiarised: instead, you should send me a PM with the URL of the post and the source from which you believe it to be copied.
2) Two or three lines copied and properly marked and attributed as a quotation is allowed. If more than about 30% of the post is copied and pasted, it is very likely to be removed. It should be noted that even if the post is your own original work, if it is currently published elsewhere in another writing site or a blog or a web page, it will be treated as if it were plagiarised.
3) Anyone found copying and pasting another user's post (discussion, response or comment) as if it were their own will be instantly and permanently banned. Usually, this is something only done by very new and callow users who are clearly just here to try and make a quick buck!

Mylot is so open about topics. You can post about anything under the sun and you can be spontaneous with your posts. Just share whatever is there in your heart. It's sad if people go for plagiarism.

Words are so important to me. Words are like music to the ears. I admire and give credit to writers who deliver such beautiful words.
And I abhor plagiarists who pass a work as their own.

@eileenleyva It's okay to get inspired by someone's writing and style. Plagiarism is cheating and it's a serious crime.

@arunima25 That is true. The great books are inspiring. The prayer songs in the Judeo literature , for instance, are so well versed that mere whispers of the lines become music to the ears.
Hmmm, the famous Desiderata, I am sure, has been inspired by some ancient writing, but Max Ehrmann made it his own.

Meh, some people still do it. But the admin has more eyes now and others easily notice some one that involves plagiarism.

I appreciate your post. Many of us are writers outside of myLot. If a person creates a story, and pours a lot of themselves into it- it must be a horrible feeling to see their work posted elsewhere, under another person's name. It's unethical in every way.

Even if I have not experienced it myself, I still feel very strongly about plagiarism.

That is how I felt in the beginning, I felt that someone was just copying my work and passing it as his own in another site. The reason why I refrained from mylotting for some time.
True, plagiarism is unethical in every way.

@eileenleyva I see l am not that keen on really spotting them at first sight unless someone would present me evidence that it is copied from other sources. Maybe not a writer that is why I always presume that the post is his.

@rsa101 In mylot, we see different styles in writing. When you've been corresponding with the same mylotters for some time, you'd know how they write. There was one instance, a few weeks back, when someone posted a discussion, and a mylotter who chanced upon that discussion found that discussion familiar, checked it, and lo and behold, it was a copy/paste of somebody else's old post.
For example, again - if I get to read your post about your aquarium in someone else's discussion, I'd know it is your work.

Writers have their own style. If you've been reading a person's work, you'd know his style. If somehow he deviates from the type of writing, then you'd know the work is not his. There are provisions for that, like quotation marks.
For example: The Gospel according to John is spiritual in presentation whereas the Gospel according to Luke is more like one is listening to a doctor, which of course Luke was. Same Gospel different writing styles.

Thank you. I posted the discussion in the hope that our fellow mylotters here have that chance to delete the discussions they simply copied from another source. Passing a work that is not one's own is never ethical. I do not wish for anyone to be banned from mylot, especially so if this site is income generating for them. But I couldn't compromise what is morally right. Thus the warning. Here's hoping that we all give second chances.

You are correct, there are so many issues to ponder about that it is not necessary to plagiarize someone's work or idea.

I agree with you. People should not plagiarize just to gain or earn. It is disrespectful to the one who created the article or post. People should just enjoy the website by engaging to discussions, reading posts and not just solely think about earning.

The worse part is these plagiarists have done injustices to their own selves by act of malfeasance.

Those that plagiarize think it's ok to do and think no one will notice. Of course, they eventually get caught. Or so I would think.
And like you said, there are so many things one can write about that there is no reason to steal someone else's stuff and pass it off as one's own.
I had some of my stuff that I published on HubPages stolen and published elsewhere. They either copied everything word for word or changed a few words here and there. At least HubPages lets us know if our stuff was possibly copied by someone else so we can try to get it removed if that is the case.

Would you believe our current senate president delivered a real good speech in Tagalog (our national language) and someone recognized the speech because he was familiar with Robert Kennedy's speeches back in the sixties, and the whole speech delivered at our senate hall was a verbatim translation of RFK's?
One is only a plagiarist when one is caught. Talk about intellectual property rights. Sigh. What stops a plagiarist? Nope, not even a copyright.
It must be infuriating to know that your work has been stolen. If only those plagiarists gave you credits, it would have been all right, but to copy the work in its entirety and passing it as their own? Grrrr.

@eileenleyva Plagiarists usually never give you credit. I wish I was able to take care of everything of mine that was stolen and published elsewhere online. But not sure how to do that.

That is the correct perspective - to write something new again and again. It's like Shakespeare writing sonnets and dramas voluminously, or Beethoven composing symphonies by the number.
