What Does Conditioner (for one's Hair) Do?

(As you can see) it's been a while since I CARED about hair-products. But my Fu Man Chu is getting lengthy---long enough to get tangled if I don't at-least brush it sometimes ... would hair-conditioner help keep the tangles out?
