Lettuce harvest

This afternoon, I will be having my second partial harvest of my lettuce for salad. Good thing is I will also be having the first partial harvest of the rocket which will add more taste to the salad. I guess the lettuce leaves will be more than enough for the salad and we might set aside the rest in the chiller of the ref because if I don’t harvest them now they might turn bitter.

@sunrisefan I hope your grandson gets better quickly. I'm sure it is a trial for you to not be able to go visit him in the hospital. I will keep him in my thoughts.

Yes we did enjoy our first salad of the lettuce last time. Unfortunately, our salad for tonight will be postponed as our grandson was brought to the hospital at 4AM for high fever and cough (diagnosed as croup which he could have probably gotten at the learning center) and it's very heartbreaking to see him with NGT in a photo sent by my daughter. He's only less than 2 years old. A while ago, my son-in-law picked up my wife to accompany my daughter in the hospital as he has a dental appointment. My daughter has begged off from the 3-day seminar she was attending (which is supposed to end today with an exam) as a nurse. I'm praying that my grandson gets well soonest.

@DaddyEvil Thank you for keeping my grandson in you thoughts. I really appreciate that. It broke my heart seeing him on NGT in the photo my daughter sent me. Right now, my wife is over there at the hospital to accompany my daughter. They only allow a maximum of 2 to accompany the patient. Only one is allowed to stay overnight with the patient in case he's admitted.

So you have two types of lettuce growing? (I think rocket refers to Arugula, which is a spicier type of lettuce. Of course, I could be mistaken, too.) Please do correct me if I've made a mistake. Thank you. The lettuce in your photo looks beautiful!

Thanks. Honestly, I too do not know if rocket is a type of lettuce because I've just known about it here. You're right - rocket is spicier than lettuce - the reason why I like it more than the lettuce in salad.

@sunrisefan I take spells where I eat lots of salads and then eat mostly fried foods. Veggies are included in the fried foods, but lettuce isn't one of them.

@DaddyEvil I'm from the Philippines but I've never known of rocket before, probably because I'm not fund of vegetables back home :) It's only here in NZ that I eat some vegetables, especially salads.

Wow that is so nice looking garden you have. It looks healthy too. They seem to have no problems with insects or disease free plants. Is that in New Zealand still?

Yes, this is here in New Zealand. The plants look healthy because I covered them with a nylon net to protect them from the birds and the cat.

@rsa101 I immediately take out weeds when I see them. Weeds are a big headache here because they easily grow everywhere. BTW, beneath that soil is a plastic weed mat which I placed to prevent weeds from sprouting. That’s what they do here. The weeds are so stubborn that even with the hard clayish soil they still grow here and there. They also have those big GI staples to put the mat in place.

@sunrisefan do they need to be plant in a greenhouse or you can just plant them directly under the Sun?

Thanks. I've read that when the leaves are about 3 to 5 inches long, it's already good to harvest them. I think some of the leaves are even 6 inches now.

@prinzcy I planted them directly under the sun. I covered them with a nylon net though because the birds and a cat messed the veggies I previously planted. The lettuce and the rocket grows well under the sun. I had no success with the spinach because I found out that they want a shady area. The tomato I planted are now bearing flowers and there's one fruit. The Chines chives and spring onions are starting to grow too. The parsley which I planted before are thinning out because they're seldom used. I have also lemon grass which my daughter's friend gave.

@sunrisefan we grew bok choy, there are some bugs you have to find them or they’ll munch away!

Sometimes I see a few leaves gnawed by bugs probably. My biggest problem is from the seed stage - slugs eat the plant starting to grow and the slugs are nowhere to be seen during the day. I've tried putting anti-slug pellets but they seem oblivious to it. I've made several attempts to plant buttercunch lettuce and bok choy and only had success in growing some after a couple of tries.

@infatuatedbby I saw something white on a couple of leaves of the bok choy and I cut them off. I've learned from a Youtuber that many are planting lettuce because worms don't eat its leaves. He says it's also the reason why you can be sure that the lettuce you buy have not been sprayed with chemicals because there's no need to.
