Hi there, I'm the new Dutchie

I'm from the Netherlands and like some others stumbled upon MyLot through Hubpages (thanks Marisa). Seems like a fun place to be to interact with people around the world. I'm an oldie (76) but still going strong despite some cracks here and there. Always think positive my mom used to say. She passed away 7 years ago at the age of 101 years old. She survived the 1918 Spanish flu, so I'm definitely planning to follow her steps and do anything in my power to survive the 2020 Covid 19. I've way too many hobbies of which you will surely hear in due time, but the main one is breeding the oldest and very rare native Dutch sheep called Drenthe Heath Sheep. I've done that for about 40 years now. I also write poetry (in English). So, that's it for now. Wishing you all the best and stay safe.

Welcome! I've always had a soft spot for the Dutch for two reasons. One is because I remember sitting in a café in Amsterdam, nearly 40 years ago, and hearing people at the next table speaking Doric (the dialect in the North-East of Scotland, where I'm from). Gradually, I realised that although it sounded like Doric, I couldn't understand a word. It was Frisian! It wasn't the words I recognised, but the "sing-song" way of speaking was exactly the same. I loved Amsterdam too, by the way. One of my favourite cities. Then, when I was living in Africa, I took ballet lessons with a Dutch woman, Mieke. She was a darling.

Ah Frisian. It's not so strange that you recognized the tone because it belongs to the group of Anglic Languages (

@MALUSE We should, but I noticed that some Europeans never even dare to comment back... they interact with Americans, but they do not reply to my comments... Go understand them!

@LadyDuck I hope you're not referring to this European Dutchie I'm still finding my way around in this MyLot labirinth of discussions. For instance: what do people do with old notifications, do I delete them?

It sounds like you live an interesting and quiet life. I really don't live either but would love to live a more quiet life if I ever get the chance. I have to say at least with COVID things have slowed down more to my liking too bad it has to be for something so horrible.

@TitiaG lol when I said quiet I meant more in the way of away from people not necessarily animals but I don't know how often you're forced to socialize with a lot of people. I'd rather hear sheep than be around a ton of people talking that said I often am around people due to various things I'm forced to do for my son or husband. I can handle one on one with people it's the big groups that really tire me out and get a bit too loud for me. I can handle the animal noises but too many conversations going on or listening to people all the time is exhausting. I have had lamb once or twice in a gyro but other than that it's not really something I eat. I typically choose beef or chicken. Anyway, what you do sounds interesting. I don't think I've been away from my husband for more than a day at a time and if I'm honest I don't think I'd like to be even as much as he drives me crazy.

My life is far from quiet. I am an inspector of the rare sheep breed I'm raising. In summer (from mid June until the end of August) I travel almost every weekend through my country to inspect the sheep of fellow breeders for the pedigree book, which I'm also keeping. During those 2-5 day trips I sleep in my big van. My hubby stays home to watch over the animals. He too likes sheep, but only when they're on his plate for dinner

Hi Titia. Welcome to myLot. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. What rebelann1949 says is true. I like sheep, well, all domestic animals really and enjoy reading about the different breeds from around the world. I haven't heard of Drenthe Heath sheep before so I'll check them out.
