I love Christmas. It means a lot to me. Although this Christmas, for all kinds of reasons including a global pandemic, won't be quite like Christmases gone by. But -- aside from the celebration of the birth of Jesus -- what makes Christmas special for you? I know for some people it's a sad time, too, and a lonely one, so I'm not trying to ignore that, but it's true that for me it's always been a happy time. These are the key things I love about it: Light and warmth in the darkest time of the year. A feeling of goodwill and hope. Getting together and keeping in touch with family and friends. The chance to rest and reflect on the year gone by and the new year ahead. I also love the beautiful, pine fragrance of Christmas trees (real ones, not plastic!) and yummy food! What about you?

It means family love and good memories of that and also the season of giving and Christ our Lords birth.

Even though I am not a Christian, we always have a holiday here every major religious day and it is the perfect time to gather with family.

Hi May, Of course, Christmas is a religious holiday, a Christian celebration, for many people, but also many people, like you and your family, celebrate the festival in another way and for other reasons. Whatever a person's faith, I think gathering together in love with family and friends is always worth celebrating, so I'm with you on that! Thanks for sharing. It's wonderful to discover everyone's perspectives.

I always keep in mind that Christmas is a celebration of Jesus as it is the day he was born. Christmas is an important event in our family as we always gather to celebrate but due to the pandemic, it will be different this and we will be celebrating at home with my husband and kids. It is also an important event for my 6 year old child as he likes to open gifts, he likes surprises and he believes in Santa.

Hi Akke, Thanks for your sharing your story. Yes, this year it will be a bit more difficult for many people. But I'm sure your faith in Jesus, who was born poor and rejected in a manger in a stable after all, will give you strength in these difficult times. Of course, Christmas is very special for children, isn't it? I didn't mention giving and receiving gifts, but that's all a part of it, too. Thank you so much!

Over here in Malaysia, Christmas is celebrated as a festive holiday (officially) as it is a Muslim Majority country, but, for the Christian communities, we celebrate the birth of Christ, while the other communities celebrate it as a festive season. On my side, we do a mix of both, as a religious celebration and a festive celebration. But i can't ignore the yummy food wow!

Hi Nigel. Thank you so much for sharing your experience over there in Malaysia -- that's amazing! It's also heartwarming to hear that both the Muslims and the Christians have found a way to celebrate together. That gives me a great deal of hope in this troubled world, so that's actually a beautiful thing to know. And yes, yummy food always helps!
