Let’s face it, when I first mentioned doing a countdown of songs that have diamond in the title this is probably the first tune that went through most people’s minds. It didn’t make the list, but there’s no way I could ignore mentioning probably the “diamond” song. So, here it is.
BONUS: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds - Beatles
And this song is probably the most striking proof of the fact that people will believe a lie, no matter how many times it’s refuted.
Most of us know the story about this song: Julian Lennon came home with a picture he’d drawn in art class in school, and John asked him what it was. The three-year-old told his dad, “Lucy, in the sky, with diamonds.”
But those who want to believe otherwise (usually the same folks who tell us the song “Hotel California” is about hell, the band Kiss’s name is an acronym meaning “Knights in Satan’s Service,” and AC/DC is also an acronym meaning “Anti-Christ/Devil’s Child” [Don Henley had a great line about that in an interview once: “We’re from Hollywood, we know what AC/DC means!” ]) still — after fifty three years — keep telling people this is about LSD. Despite the fact that Lennon refuted that almost until his dying breath. Despite the fact that most major Beatles fan sites have a picture of Julian’s drawing. And despite the fact that so many songs since (and heck, even before, if you listen to “Cocaine Blues” from 1947) have had NO problem in being forthright about the topic when they wanted to use it.
Some people, I swear.
